Final Jeopardy: New Words in the 18th Century (5-12-23)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (5/12/2023) in the category “New Words in the 18th Century” was:

Describing these, Captain Cook wrote, “the manner in which” they’re done “must certainly cause intollerable pain”

7x champ Hannah Wilson, a data scientist from Chicago, IL, won $189,801 so far. In Game 8, the competitors are: Skyler Gailing, an editorial and community associate from Exeter, NH; and Victoria Ford, an independent bookstore owner from Saint Paul, MN.

Coicidence?? The last time we went to the Captain Cook well for FJ! was on April 13, 2023, Ben Chan’s second game. As you may know, Ben had 3 runaway games. Due to illness, his run was interrupted but he is returning for his 4th game this coming Monday, May 15th. The winner of this match will be up against Ben.

…The former Nguyen Sinh Cung, took a name that means “he who enlightens” show

Hannah finished in the lead with a runaway $29,000. Victoria was second with $800. Skyler was last with $0 and out of the game at this point. All clues were shown.

Only ONE of the contestants left in FJ! got it right.

WHAT ARE TATTOOS?

On his first trip to the South Pacific, Captain Cook couldn’t help noticing the body art on the Polynesian natives, particularly facial “tattows”. “They are so exact in the application of these Figures,” he wrote in his journal, “that no difference can be found between the one side of the face and the other, if the whole is marked, for some have only one side, and some a little on both sides; hardly any but the old Men have the whole tattow’d.” Cook concluded that “intollerable pain” was the reason why some fellows rethought the wisdom of tattooing.

Etymology Online traces its second entry for “tattoo” to Captain Cook, noting that it comes from “a Polynesian noun (such as Tahitian and Samoan tatau, Marquesan tatu ‘puncture, mark made on skin’).”

Victoria went with shackles. She lost $799 and finished with $1.00.

Hannah got it right. She bet $11,000 and won the game with $40,000. Her 8-day total is $229,801. Don’t miss Monday’s match when Ben Chan returns.

Wow. The two challengers were the weakest I’ve seen since the lockdown competitors. Victoria almost sounded like a dilettante.

I have to thank TCM for the “Metropolitan” stumper – just saw that a few months ago, and the commentary mentioned the third film. Unusually, I got well over half the stumpers correct, but, as there were SO many, that wasn’t too difficult of an undertaking!

I thought final was rather easy. However, had I not lived in HI, it might not have come to me as easily.

  2. VJ says:

Besides the Night of the Hunter scene I linked to for that “we will come rejoicing” hymn, there’s a Gunsmoke episode with Jack Elam as a ne’er-do-well. He gets drunk as a hoot owl and goes around singing that hymn. Lynn Hamilton is also in it as a nun. She is better known as Fred Sanford’s girlfriend Donna.

  3. Rick says:

I was stumped in FJ as the clues didn’t ring a bell with me. Well, as the saying goes, you learn something new every day.

  4. VJ says:

Again I’m amazed at Hannah’s pre-FJ score considering all those triple stumpers! There were 28 stumpers between yesterday and today.

There were about that many in Ben Chan’s 3 games.

    • Rick says:

Hannah clearly outmatched the other two contestants in today’s game, but not so in yesterday’s game.

  5. Kevin Cheng says:

Hannah certainly dominated in today’s game and most of the match has belong to Hannah. She was the only player to ring in before the first break and it’s the first time that only one player rings in while the other two contestants were still at zero. Both of the challengers couldn’t get more correct responses and they didn’t have a chance at all. Weak opponents today.
