WHO IS NORA EPHRON?

The quote in today’s final clue comes from Nora Ephron’s 6/27/2012 obituary in the New York Times, the day after the multi-talented writer passed away. “She was a journalist, a blogger, an essayist, a novelist, a playwright, an Oscar-nominated screenwriter and a movie director,” it adds, and recounts her many successes in those fields. They included 3 Best Writing Oscar nominations for “Silkwood” (1983), “When Harry Met Sally” (1989) and “Sleepless in Seattle” (1993), as well as her best-selling essay collections: “I Feel Bad About My Neck” (2006) and “I Remember Nothing” (2010).

In 2013, the Tribeca Film Festival created the $25,000 Nora Ephron Award, given annually to a female writer or filmmaker “with a distinctive voice.”

Indi didn’t have a response. He lost his $2,000 bet and finished with $500.

Beth wrote down Fannie Flagg (alive and 73). She lost her $4,000 bet, leaving her with $2,800.

Katherine got it right. She bet $6,601 and won the 4th semi-final spot with $13,601.

  2. Alfred Robert Hogan says:

Recent decades pop culture stuff is not my forte. But many TT contestants seem weak on core subjects such as history (e.g., 1920s), geography (e.g., Golden Triangle), education (e.g., McGuffey’s Readers), et cetera.

  3. Lou says:

Congrats to Kathy in getting this right. Still nora ephron will be remembered in sleepless in Seattle, and when Harry met Sally. Indi couldn’t get any rhythm going so I really hope these teacher’s will pick up the pace a bit and that two more will be added to the Wildcard for the semi-finals next week. What surprised you today in this round?

    • VJ says:

I dunno, Lou, it wasn’t exactly surprising to me when Indi got that DD and looked like he knew it. Then it turns out that he missed the boat because he apparently only heard Roman Emperor and not the Holy part. Yikes! I guess I would say it’s more like relatable because I could totally see something like that happening to me on there. LOL!!

VJ, Will there be 3 girls next Thursday and Friday or will another man will win the tournament?

  4. John B. says:

The English teacher got it, so congrats to Katherine, the other 2 had apparently no idea. Well, it was a long time ago and her marriage to Bernstein was not that high profile and lasted only 4 years.

  5. Dalton Higbee says:

It has been a slow week so far. Hopefully they’ll pick up the pace tomorrow.

    • Richard Corliss says:

Yeah, but I hope it will be six girls and three boys just like last year and this time lets hope there will be three girls on next Thursday and Friday.
