WHAT IS THE MAGINOT LINE?

The words in today’s final clue were in this New York Times 6/19/1940 headline: “Failure of French Military Policy Is Laid to Maginot Fortifications; Devised Purely for Defense, Line Proved to Be Liability When It Came to Offense– Stout Hearts No Match for Tanks”. (On this page, it says you have to be a NYT subscriber to access the entire article.)

The Maginot Line (Ligne Maginot) is a series of underground bunkers along France’s border with Germany. It was intended to protect France from German invasions at an exorbitant cost in the billions. In June 1940, the Germans conquered France, cutting through Belgium and Luxembourg via the Ardennes Forest thereby circumventing the Maginot Line. As a result, the Maginot Line became a joke and a synonym for failure, although the Army says it had its uses after WWII, “as part of a Cold War defense against any possible Warsaw Pact invasion.”Learn more.

Dan’s guess of New Zealand for Marcus Garvey’s birthplace SHOCKED me. 😳

  2. Howard says:

The first DD and FJ perplexed me no end. I did know the other 2 DDs.
Really thought someone would know the largest lake and the continent with the Polish-named mountain.
I started to criticize Sharon for not betting $2101, but then realized she had to bet enough to lock out Dan if both were correct on FJ.

  3. VJ says:

I just fixed the Superlative Earth clue about the mountain named after the Polish patriot on page 2 — What I had there gave the answer away, although I thought I had changed it. Sorry to those who already saw it and for those who don’t look at those clues, here’s the link to an article Ken Jennings wrote on the topic.

  4. Rick says:

None of us got FJ either, but there’s always tomorrow.

  5. Collin says:

Crystal said “throwing up” during a Daily Double clue.

  6. Ismael Gomez says:

Disappointed show as all 3 DDs were missed resulted our first skunking since June 22, 2022 and a tough final as we got a triple stumper. I am sure William Weyser would say darn those daily doubles since the DDs and FJ were not nice to anybody.

    • William Weyser says:

Boy, we’re off to a “flying” start this month, but we’re just getting started. Maybe, the Daily Doubles & Final Jeopardy! will be nicer tomorrow.

  7. Kevin Cheng says:

Tough final to start off the week and we had a small payday of 4,199 which I think is the lowest payday of the season. Crystal is gonna get a chance to earn a lot more money tomorrow.

  8. VJ says:

Coincidence of the Day: The world’s largest lake may have been fresh in the mind of anyone who watched Alex Trebek’s first episode on YouTube last week. It was the answer to the $500 clue in Lakes & Rivers LINK

    • Sam in Seattle says:

Thanks for the link, VJ. It was great to see the old episode. Brought back great memories! I think the world’s largest lake has been the topic of several game show questions – I remember it on The Chase and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire”
Also, I thought FJ was pretty tough – requiring knowledge of eponyms, WWII and “foreign” history. That said, the Maginot Line was the only thing that seemed appropriate.
