TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE?

What officially became the Marseille Provence Chamber of Commerce and Industry was founded on 8/5/1599 in an effort to provide some protection for merchants from pirates and other criminal elements. According to French wikipedia, in 1650, the cities of Rouen, Dunkirk and Lyon followed Marseille’s example. English wikipedia says that the oldest English-speaking Chamber of Commerce was founded in Jersey (the island) in 1768, followed by one in New York City that same year. Today, these business networks exist world-wide on many levels, from community to international chambers of commerce.

Jasmine had “the Legion of Honor.” She bet nothing so she stayed at $7,800.

Adam got it right. He bet $26,999 and finished with $53,999.

James got it, too. He bet $20,500 and won the game with $54,017. His 18-day total is $1,329,604.

Enough of that: James posted this message on his Facebook page last Saturday: Jeopardy! will no longer allow personal shoutouts in Final Jeopardy! So take heed! They will be considered part of the response.

VJ, coincidentally, The Shop Around the Corner was just on TCM the other night.

    • VJ says:

What a coincidence, Rhonda… I was not surprised they didn’t get that one. In the Poets category, I was super-impressed that James got Edna St. Vincent Millay.

  2. John Christian Ambion says:

Not finding any of the three Daily Doubles on Friday, as well as “no shout-outs” rule is the reason why James’s 18th game did NOT became a runaway. Adam is ALMOST being a giant-killer here.

In the words of @William Weyser, @VJ, whoever made the “no shout-outs” rule and ban fun wagers like $69 or $666, MUST PAY. I have a feeling it’s Eurovision 2013 and 2016 all over again.

    • Bob Chang says:

Yep, political correctness gone crazy, the no-fun 👮‍♀️ police!

    • John B./I. says:

      @JCB
In general I think producers – and people at large – should lighten up a little. In that way I agree with you!

  3. Richard Corliss says:

Adam was so close to being a giant killer by $18.

    • William Weyser says:

We’ll get that ”Giant Killer” someday. Will we get it tomorrow? We’ll have to wait and see.

      • Cece says:

I think James has won more than enough money. Time for someone else to win some dough, imo.

        • VJ says:

@Cece,, he’s got to win tomorrow and Wed. to beat David Madden’s 19 games and then he will be tied with Julia Collins.

So he’s got to win on Thursday, to get to that No. 2 spot

        • Cece says:

          Why? 🙂

        • VJ says:

Because I want him to get to No. 2 at least 😉

        • Cece says:

I don’t wannnnt him to [in a very whining voice].

When is he gonna lose? (Like one of the guys here used to whine about Matt Jackson’s run.)

Now seriously, Adam was intent on kicking his butt today. So close!

        • VJ says:

lol, yes, I remember that well during Matt Jackson’s run 😀

I agree, Adam had a definite battle plan before he stepped on the stage and he played a great game.

  4. VJ says:

@John, in response to the possibility of people still giving a shoutout or joke answers when they either can’t win or don’t know FJ! —

I think it’s a matter of respect now. If the show has indicated it doesn’t want to see that anymore, why would anyone still be looking for that opportunity? Makes me wonder what percentage of viewers will find that amusing. I know I won’t.

    • John B./I. says:

      @VJ
I’m not talking about silly or joke answers. But what’s wrong with “Happy B’day,Mom!”??
What’s the harm? J! getting dictatorial?

      • VJ says:

I don’t see why they can’t shorten their response to Alex in the chat and add that in if it’s that important to them.

LOL. Kinda reminds me of Paul Lynde in Bye Bye Birdie —
“Ed Sullivan…. Ed Sullivan… We’re gonna be on Ed Sullivan”

        • John B./I. says:

Well, you don’t like them. That’s your right. I have NO problem with them as long as they are decent and not obnoxious. That is MY right.

        • VJ says:

You know, seriously, there is no need to get all excited about it to the point where you have to employ your caps lock for EMPHASIS!!!!.

l never said I don’t like the shoutouts to begin with. I don’t care about them one way or the other.

If it is okay with the show, it’s okay with me. If it’s not okay with the show, then I think it is obnoxious to do something you’ve been asked not to do.

        • John Christian Ambion says:

@John B./I., @VJ, Jeopardy! producers are no fun police, and I mean it. In my opinion, they make a very huge mistake.

        • John B./I. says:

Apparently VJ, we have a different perception in terms of liberalism and conservatism. And I am sure I am not the only one who has no problem with them. Different strokes for different folks.

        • VJ says:

As I said, it’s a matter of respect. It has nothing to do with liberalism or conservatism.

If you go on the show, you should respect their rules and requests PERIOD

    • John B./I. says:

PERIOD, sure. If rules would always be respected, mankind would never have been able to make/control fire and Germany would still be a fascist Nazi state.

  5. Krish says:

@Bob It is the highest second place total of all time. It used to be $44,400 by a challenger in Ken Jennings’ 18th game. Funny to think how this is James’ 18th game also.

  6. aaaa says:

Adam’s $53,999 is the highest losing score in J! history. I wonder if $27K is the highest second place score going into FJ!? Seems like it could be.

    • Dal Higbee says:

$27,600 is the highest second place score going into FJ!? It was a celebrity game from January 21, 2010. That was Elizabeth, but lost to Pat Sajak.

  7. VJ says:

Congrats to James and kudos to Adam for going for it when he got that DD. Heh heh, people have been griping that the games are no longer competitive but Adam showed ’em it can be.

  8. John B./I. says:

Congratulations to James (again) but also to Adam!!! Tough to lose with that score! Adam almost got him today, only the second time James did not have a runaway. Before James $53.999 would have been way up on the payout list for the season!
Funny that the CoC in 2000 mentioned in the clue by VJ was in Las Vegas. It’s not anymore on H.H. Parkway though today. (Symphony Park Avenue is today’s location). Things (buildings, hotels, addresses) sure change a LOT in L.V……
Kind of strange that James missed the first DD. Hepatic is a rather common expression, even among people not in the medical profession ( hepatitis= inflammation of the liver, most often caused by alcohol, drugs or a virus, is almost an ubiquitous word today..) Hepat=liver in Greek, and medical terms are 99% Greek, Latin or a combo thereof.

  9. Lou says:

That was quite a close call here! I thought James’s streak was going to end today, but somehow he managed to make a comeback despite missing that only daily double in the first round. Adam played a great game today despite coming this close to being the next new jeopardy champion. VJ and John, you guys were thinking along the lines of James was going to be defeated am I right? But still though Legion of Honor? That is a medal awarded to the soldiers during the first world war and has nothing to do with the chamber of commerce. Every town in the United States has the chamber. What was Jasmine really thinking with that response?

    • John B./I. says:

      @Lou
The legion of honor used to be awarded only to soldiers. But now head of states, artists (singers, actors, athletes etc etc also receive it for having done something extraordinary for France or in general.). Barbra Streisand, Chuck Yeager, even organizations like the U.S. Naval Acadamy were awarded the Legion d’Honneur, from Albania to former Yugoslavia. There are thousands with the LdH who have achieved general things, nothing to do with France. France just acknowleges (ed) when somebody was/is outstanding, in a LOT of fields.
      And the Marseille hint….

  10. Bob Chang says:

No more shoutouts in FJ? Sad day😔 Is Adam’s 53,999 the highest 2nd place score? If not, anybody know what is?🤔

    • VJ says:

@Bob, yeah, it is the highest second place score in any of James’ games (so far). Also the highest second place pre-FJ total of any of his challengers. You can see all the Pre-FJ scores for this month on the Who Won Jeopardy! post

      • Bob Chang says:

Thanks VJ. I was pretty sure it was the highest total during James’s run, Do you know what is the highest 2nd place finish all-time?

        • VJ says:

@Bob, nope, sorry — I really watch the show more for the clues and to look up stuff on clues that I don’t know, or even more stuff on clues I do know but don’t know why I know 😀

I’m not that good at math or that into statistics and I mainly make the score images to help me not make mistakes when I’m typing the numbers. (Heh, sometimes I do anyway)

      • Richard Corliss says:

Why did they say no more shout outs in Jeopardy? Why is that a new rule?

        • John B./I. says:

          @Richard
“Officially” to prevent any confusion about right/wrong in FJ when it might interfere with the answer. As far as I know J! always discouraged but never enforced the rule until now. I wonder what they are going to do if somebody can’t win (the leader has a runaway for example) and s/he writes one anyway? Edit it or what? Kind of petty imo. As long as they don’t interfere with the answer they should be allowed, after all. there is such a thing as the First Amendment….But then again: He who pays, gives the orders….

        • VJ says:

Your guess is as good as mine, Richard. My guess is that they didn’t mind the occasional shoutout, but it is just becoming too common.
