WHAT IS HAWAII FIVE-O?

According to IMDB Trivia: Magnum, P.I. “was originally to be set in San Pedro, California (near Los Angeles), but was moved to Hawaii because CBS did not want to close its recently-remodeled Hawaii production offices and sound stages when Hawaii Five-O (1968) ceased production in 1980. This show started production that year and contained occasional references to Steve McGarrett and “Five-O”, although McGarrett was never shown.”

A reboot of Hawaii Five-O aired in 2010 and a reboot Magnum P.I. aired in 2018. A two-part crossover episode of the two series aired in January 2020.

A 2014 clue: UNTRUE DETECTIVE ($200) This ’80s title P.I. referred to McGarrett & the Five-O unit as if they were still working

Dillon thought it was M.A.S.H. He bet and lost his whole $10,600.

Ian went with Mannix. That cost him $11,000 and left him with $600.

Johanna also went with M.A.S.H. She lost $8,601 but won the game with the $6,999 she had left. Johanna Stoberock is the new Jeopardy! champ.

I agree with all of the easy misses, especially FJ, but I’m wondering why nobody commented on whether any of the players had actually seen an episode of Jeopardy. If they had, you’d have thought they would have known how to bet in FJ. If you’re in distant or even close third against two evenly-matched leaders, don’t bet anything. The leaders have to guard against each other, so you can sneak in with a win if everybody misses.

    • VJ says:

I really have no interest in what the players bet or don’t bet. imo, they have to live with whatever the consequences of their bets, so they ought to bet whatever makes them happy with no regrets.

That being said, in Eric’s place, I would have bet it all. I’d rather take a shot at a bigger payday than shoot for second place or end up in a tie with Jesse if my only chance to win was the leader being wrong.

P.S. I didn’t realize Otto posted this on Tuesday’s game. I was referring to Eric’s bet in FJ! on Thursday

I would like the clue W to which What is Model UN 4/25/23

    • VJ says:

      @Judith, here it is:

THE UNITED NATIONS ($1600) U.N. public information officer Omar Hernández’ is among those who’ve gone from this student simulation to the real thing

  3. Jason says:

In the Double J round, right after Ian got the $800 Separation clue correct, the camera view was changed to the left of the contestants, and elevated. This lasted just under 4 seconds. I first thought something was edited, but, on reviewing, Ian’s speaking lines up with what you can see. Just wondering.

FJ was easy, full stop. That could be reverse engineered, by thinking, “where was Magnum?” Then, when you get that, what else could it be? And, it’s more than ironic that two players said M*A*S*H. But, Mannix? Really? The thing that most stood out about Mannix was that he could take a FEROCIOUS beating, which would kill an average man, and, next week, he was right as rain, wash, rinse, repeat.

And, Howard, the Magnum, PI reboot has only been on NBC for a few weeks, but, had 4 prior seasons on CBS.

  4. Howard says:

Great game, good scores thru 2 rounds. Novelist Johanna definitely benefited from those literature and mythology clues.

Shocked that no one knew who wrote “Trees” or the 2-letter MO city. Come on.

Never saw the two old shows from the FJ clue, but that’s no excuse.
My brain freeze made it a quad stumper. Actually, there’s a new reboot of “Magnum” which began a few weeks ago, and I did see the first few episodes. I thought the two older players might get it.

    • Howard says:

Also blanked on the “Portlandia” star who’s extremely well-known and popular here in Portland.

  5. Rick says:

Another tough FJ (or so it seemed), and I sure thought that I had seen this same FJ before. Anyways, my brother was the only one among us who got it right. In fact, he got it right off the bat.
