Final Jeopardy: National Historic Landmarks (4-2-15)

The Final Jeopardy question (4/2/2015), in the category “National Historic Landmarks” was:

50 years after San Francisco’s cable cars became a National Historic Landmark, this city’s street railway got the designation in 2014.

New champ Kerry Greene won $19,201 in yesterday’s match. Today she takes on these two players: Niels Hirschmann, from Belmont, CA; and Sharon Boyd, from Washington, DC.

Round 1: Kerry got the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “It Borders Both Countries” under the $1,000 clue, the last one on the board. She was in the lead with $6,400, double what Sharon had in second place. She bet $3,000 and she was RIGHT.

WHAT IS NEW ORLEANS?

On September 30, 2014, U.S. Secretary of the Interior, Sally Jewell, announced 9 National Historic Landmarks and New Orleans’ St. Charles Line was one of them. The announcement described it as “the nation’s oldest operational street railway, a transportation method that at its peak carried nearly 16 billion passengers nationwide each year, and is the only streetcar system dating from that period to remain in operation…. The cars have continuously operated on the line’s tracks since 1923-24. Of the tens of thousands originally manufactured, the St. Charles Line’s cars are the only conventional streetcars to have remained in operation within their original system.” (U.S. Dept. of the Interior)

Sharon bet $4,799 and finished with $9,599.

Niels bet it all and finished with $23,600.

Kerry bet $7,001 and won her second match with $23,601. Her 2-day total is $42,802.

FJ Results: 4-2-15

During the chat, Kerry and Alex talked about her big-time interest in genealogy. She mentioned going back 107 generations to Egypt in one line. In another, she started to worry about her documentation when she went all the way back to God.

Thanks for all the good wishes, everybody! I may have looked calm and cool, but I was shaking inside!

I would rather play like Michael yesterday than Niels did today. Of course if he barely bets enough to take the lead on the last DD, he probably still comes up short. If he, however, thinks “what is my downside if I miss my chance for the lead (6.2 v. 14.2)”, he might have concluded the amount left would be insufficient and that he should have bet it all. If he does that, and all else finishes the same, he would have won. Clearly poor, and overly cautious, game theory likely cost him the game.

@Eric, if you check J Board Niels is posting lengthy explanations there. Just thought you might want to read them. They are confusing to me. He’s long winded.

      • Eric S says:

        Thank you, Jacob.
Lol. Sounds like he may have spent a lot of time later trying to justify his play.
Really, the only time I would justify such a conservative wager would be if an extremely strong player knew he held a huge relative advantage in the remaining clues. But that could only happen with players who knew their opponents well (e.g. Ken Jennings in that Roman Numerical category in a tournament ). This is simply not the case in a normal game.

Alex wouldn’t say “I thought that the response is incorrect”, but, however, Niels’ response was accepted.

Fantastic. So far this week 72.7% on fj. Was surprised at the miss though on Phil Knight as Nike co-founder.

Overall a good game. Congrats Kerry!

Watched the game with my impressed granddaughter when I nailed Russian lit. LOL!

I like Kerry’s cool, calm and collected demeanor and her voice.

Will we see a back-to-back ToC competitors? Man, I hope so! Based on my view on time, we are running slow on those. GO KERRY!
