Final Jeopardy: TV Music (4-16-14)

The Final Jeopardy question (4/16/2014), in the category “TV Music” was:

“Crystal Blue Persuasion” by Tommy James & the Shondells was heard in this drama’s “Gliding Over All” episode.

5x champ Sandie Baker went over the $100K mark yesterday with total winnings of $115,200. Today her opponents are: Kathryn Schoenberger, from Washington, D.C.; and Matt Farr, from Lookout Mountain, TN.

Round 1: Matt found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “That’s Painful” under the $1,000 clue. He was in third place with $1,000, $4,600 less than Sandie in second place. He made it a true Daily Double and he was RIGHT.

Sandie finished with $26,000, her third runaway in 3 days. Kathryn was next with $5,800 and Matt was in third place with $4,600.

NONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right for the third day in a row.

WHAT IS “BREAKING BAD”?

Ugh! Tough clue if you don’t watch the show and don’t get the “crystal” reference. The 1969 Tommy James tune was one of 6 played during “Glide Over All,” the mid-season finale of Season 5 (Ep. 8), which originally aired September 2, 2012. (Music – Breaking Bad Wiki)

It would have been eminently more fair to identify the artist and ask for the song name (or vice versa), and we can even try that with a song from the finale of that same season.

In “Felina”, the Season 5 finale of “Breaking Bad”, this Marty Robbins song was heard; it mentions the episode’s title 7 times. show

Matt came up with “The Sopranos,” which played a lot of 1960s music. He bet and lost it all.

Kathryn thought it was “Touched by an Angel.” She lost her $3,400 bet and finished with $2,400.

Sandie didn’t have a guess. She lost $1,000 and ending up winning this one with $25,000, so the Reign of Sandie Baker continues. Her 6-day total is $140,200.

This was sure one for the coincidence file.

This morning my wife and I watched the “Gliding Over All” episode for the first time (we’ve been binge-watching Breaking Bad as first-timers over the past couple of weeks). A few minutes after it was over, I pulled up Jeopardy on the DVR (we’re always a few days behind), and that just happened to be Final Jeopardy!

how do you people not know about the greatest tv show of all time? O______O

    • kathy donaldson says:

I have never watched Breaking Bad. Just because you think its a great show doesn’t mean EVERYONE watches it. I didn’t really understand the clue either. Maybe the contestants don’t get much time to watch TV. They seem like pretty busy people!

It’s because of FJs like this one that I would never go on Jeopardy.

Sandie is quite a champ, and unlike someone I won’t mention named Arthur Chu, she has a nice, almost self-effacing personality.

But you can’t please everyone. Over on Jeopardy’s Facebook page, some are complaining that Sandie pronounces “hundred” as “hunnerd.”

She can pronounce it any way she wants as long as in the ToC she mops up the floor with someone I won’t mention named Arthur Chu.

I think we got a little bit of a preview today (when Matt did a little jumping around) that Chu’s playing style won’t rattle Sandie in the least in the TOC

the DDs on the other hand were kind of VERY easy. come on: they give you the “r.a.”, taiwan is a no-brainer and if you ever heard of hemingway or spencer tracy you had to know this novel.

    • vj says:

yes – I thought putting R.A. in that DD clue was ridiculous. Then they made the FJ so hard. On this one, though, Sandie is usually pretty good on TV categories and I thought she might know it. I guess she just does not watch “Breaking Bad.”

  5. john blahuta says:

@vj – i totally agree. and the marty robbins song was covered by many artists, john denver etc…AND the name felina is mentioned several times.”out in the west texas town of el paso, i fell in love with a mexican girl…..etc” i like denver’s cover best.

i am pretty sure that all 3 would have gotten your clue. that song has been played over and over again.

I have a 45 of the short version where they cut out a verse — it’s really a long song!

Marty Robbins also had another song telling the story from the girl’s pov. Her name is mentioned 10x but it (and the title of the song) is spelled “Feleena”.

PS – I am very partial to my son’s rendition of El Paso.
