Final Jeopardy: International Symbols (4-13-17)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (4/13/2017) in the category “International Symbols” was:

Now representing an organization, it was formally adopted in Article 7 of the 1864 Geneva Convention.

New champ Jane Joseph won $17,402. In her second game, she is up against these two players: Deborah Beams, from Dallas, TX; and Lee Barrow, from Denver, CO.

Round 1 Categories: Literary Quotes – The Body – Catch the Quechua Word – Movie Adjectives – Say It With Chocolate – “B” My Love

Jane found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Say It With Chocolate” under the $800 clue, with 11 clues left after it. She was in the lead with $4,200, $800 more than Deborah in second place. She bet $1,500 and thought it was cacao. That was WRONG.

Originally it meant coffee that came from Yemen: later, it came to mean coffee flavored with chocolate. show

Deborah finished in the lead with $5,000. Jane was second with $4,100 and Lee was last with $3,000.

Round 2 Categories: The Long Arm of the Law – Geography – Ancient History – Rhymes With Nada – Her Top 40 Band – Notables & the Chinese Zodiac Placemat

Jane found the first Daily Double in “Geography” under the $2,000 clue on the 3rd pick. She was in second place with $5,700 at this point, $500 less than Deborah’s lead. She bet $1,500 again and, this time, she was RIGHT.

Deborah found the last Daily Double in “The Long Arm of the Law” under the $1,600 clue with only 6 clues to go after it. In second place with $8,200, she had $7,400 less than Jane’s lead. She bet $5,000 and she was RIGHT.

Jane finished in the lead with $13,600. Deborah was next with $13,200 and Lee was in third place with $8,600.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS THE RED CROSS?

In “The Red Cross of the Geneva Convention. What It Is,” a pamphlet published in 1878, Clara Barton wrote: “The sign of the Red Cross was adopted because it was necessary for recognizance and safety, and for carrying out the general provisions of the treaty, that a uniform badge should be agreed upon. The Red Cross was chosen out of compliment to the Swiss Republic, where the first convention was held, and in which the Central Commission has its headquarters. The Swiss colors being a white cross on a red ground, the badge chosen was these colors reversed.”

Lee got it right. His $5,000 bet brought him up to $13,600. Alex said he was in the lead but at that point, he was actually in a tie with Jane.

Deborah also got it. She bet $8,800, putting her in the lead with $22,000.

Jane came up with “the olive branch and dove.” She lost her $5,000 bet, dropping her down to $8,600. That made Deborah the new Jeopardy! champ.

So in response to Trebek’s question, my idea of spreading the wealth around would be to let the other players keep their $$ but I don’t suppose they will ever do that. Remember Margaret Miles’ defending game that Andrew Pau won? They would have had to shell out almost $100K that day!

Since I can’t believe that none of the players ever heard that Jefferson Airplane song in the Chinese Zodiac category. I assumed they just didn’t know the singer’s name.

I think it’s more exciting waiting for the Tournament of Champions when there are players who win more than 5 games.

I wished they would have finished the Her Top 40 Band category today. I got the 3 clues they got to.

But the problem with that of course (as explained in several Jeopardy! references) is that you tempt players to ‘stop playing’ and sit on a big number if they think they can’t win (too far behind, don’t like the FJ category, etc. ). Better to have everyone with a win or else approach.

I knew the song, the singer, and the group, and thought of it fleetingly when I saw the clue, but have to admit I didn’t know the “official” title was White Rabbit. I’ve always known it as “Go Ask Alice.”

Too bad Alice isn’t in the Chinese zodiac…..

      • VJ says:

LOL, Kevin. Yeah, “ask Alice” is in the lyrics several times, while the actual phrase “white rabbit” isn’t at all so I can see why some folks would think that was the title. (the lyrics just have “if you go chasing rabbits”)

Some of the misheard lyrics for this song on this page are amusing, though some really sound made up 🙂

I remember reading the memoir “Go Ask Alice” back in the 70’s. Many, many years later it turned out that it was a work of fiction. It was also made into a made for tv movie back then.

        • VJ says:

I read that “memoir” too, Rhonda. How about a category called “Tainted Literature” for that and other hoaxes. LOL!

When Alex Trebek first came out, he said he was wondering if the audience prefers “one champion who wins a lot of games in a row or whether you like it better when the wealth is spread around with a new champion every one or two days”
