Final Jeopardy: Biblical Names (3-7-14)

The Final Jeopardy question (3/7/2014), in the category “Biblical Names” was:

In Genesis 4 this name is chosen because God “hath appointed me another seed.”

Today is the last match of the 1990s Battles of the Decade: Today’s contestants are: Brad Rutter, Jeopardy’s all-time biggest money winner; Mike Dupée, the 1996 TOC winner; and Jill Buzendahl Chimka, a 4x champion.

Mike found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “The New York Times: The 1990s” under the $1,000 clue. He was in second place with $1,600, $5,600 less than Brad’s lead. He bet $1,500 and he was RIGHT.

Brad finished in the lead with $7,200. Mike was second with $5,100 and Jill was last with $1,200.

Brad found the last Daily Double in “American Revolution” under the $1,200 clue on the third pick of the round. He was in the lead with $8,000, $2,500 more than Mike in second place. He bet $3,000 and he was RIGHT.

Brad found the last Daily Double in “Asian Geography” under the $1,600 clue. In the lead with $12,200 now, he was $4,700 ahead of Mike in second place. Fearing an “evil” clue, he only bet $2,000, but it wasn’t that bad — he was RIGHT.

Brad finished in the lead with $30,600, a runaway he got by correctly answering the very last clue on the board. Mike was next with $14,300. Jill had zero so it was the end of road for her.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS SETH?

Here is the verse in Genesis 4:25, from the King James Bible. “And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth: For God, said she, hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew.” You can see other versions on Bible Gateway. Some, but not all, leave out the word “seed.”

Mike got it right. He bet $14,000 and finished with $28,300.

Brad thought it was Ishmael, but he didn’t bet anything so he won the match.

Kudos to Mike all the same, for playing a great game and getting FJ right.

Also, the DD in the first round was essentially the tiebreaker clue in the finals of the 1996 teen tourney.

If Brad hadn’t rung in on the last DJ clue and Mike didn’t as well, it would have most likely taken a tiebreaker to decide the winner. If Mike rang in on the last DJ clue and was right, Mike would have probably won.

That’s true. I do like a game where 2nd place doesn’t give up. I put a video of that last category on the weekly FJ recap.
