Final Jeopardy: Women Authors (3-30-15)

The Final Jeopardy question (3/30/2015), in the category “Women Authors” was:

In addition to her novels, she also wrote a children’s book about Sun Yat-Sen and an “Oriental Cookbook”.

Returning champ Michael Bilow won $12,401 and the title on Friday. Today he takes on these two players: Cynthia Davis, from Atlanta, GA; and David Zimand, from Silver Spring, MD.

Round 1: Michael found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Adjectives” under the $1,000 clue. He was in the lead with $6,400, $2,800 more than David in second place. He made it a true Daily Double and he was RIGHT.

Michael finished in the lead with $13,000. David was second with $3,800 and Cynthia was last with $1,400.

Round 1 had a category called “Bottles of Waters” and the contestants kept calling it “Bodies of Water.” That category came up in Round 2. Alex kidded Cynthia not to called it “Bottles.”

Round 2: Cynthia found the first Daily Double in “Bodies of Water” under the $2,000 clue. She was still in third place with $3,000, $10,000 less than Michael’s lead. She made it a true Daily Double, too, and she was RIGHT.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS PEARL S. BUCK?

Buck won the Pulitzer Prize for her 1931 “The Good Earth” and later, the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1938. It was made into a 1937 film starring Paul Muni and Luise Rainer (Best Actress Oscar). Oprah featured the novel in her Book Club in 2004, putting it back to the best-seller list that year. Buck wrote many more novels, biographies and short stories. Her cookbook was published in 1972.

Just about a month ago, Paper and Salt reviewed her cookbook and her Brown Bean Shrimp with Garlic Green Beans recipe: “‘Never forget that the essence of the Chinese meals is variety and harmony,’ Buck counsels. Any proper dinner, she notes, should include at least one seafood dish, one pork or beef option, a vegetable, and an egg dish … and that’s not including the requisite accompaniments of rice, soup, tea and fruit. ‘Second helpings need not be a repetition, but a fresh new taste,’ she writes– a mantra that, forty years later, has taken root today in small-plates restaurants around the country, Chinese or not.”

David got it right. His $3,600 brought him up to $14,200.

Cynthia thought it was Amy Tan. That cost her $13,000 and she finished with $200.

Michael also thought it was Amy Tan. He only lost $2,799 so he won the match with $26,401. His 2-day total is $38,802.

FJ Results: 3-30-15

During the chat, Alex and Michael discussed “virtual reality.” Alex said he only believes in reality.

He beat his own record? That’s just undoubtebly jaw dropping. I think the Hometown Howdies may have dropped a possible ToC berth spoiler. I’m just being honest with ya here. LoL! Do you think that we can end up having our full Tourney of Champs together with a Streak of Virility? I hope so. Michael can’t be caught

    • jacob ska says:

Leena, you are correct about the HH. Michael will be on Jeopardy for a few days if the video is correct. He was most impressive today.

      • Cece says:

He’s a great player. And he likes to bet big. I wonder what will end his streak: a stronger opponent or a big wager on his part.

        • VJ says:

I think it will probably be a big bet on a DD, but of course, it could be an FJ he doesn’t get where he doesn’t have enough to win anyway if someone else gets it right.

if the #s are right it was a runaway, right?

    • Eric S says:

Yes! 29,200 is more than twice 13,200!
Further, Michael bet the most he could without pulling a Clavin (they no longer allow for betting down to allow the possibility of a tie).

      • john blahuta says:

i know that! usually it is pointed outin the recap when there is a runaway. it was a rhetorical question.

        • VJ says:

I was babysitting the twins all day – you get one fed and quiet and then it’s round 2 – otherwise, I probably would have got it in. 🙂

        • Cece says:

LOL! Once I took a nanny job with twins. After a week, they wore me out!

        • VJ says:

@Cece – the next closest in age between kids in our family is an aunt and nephew who are 9 months apart, but a big difference there was the aunt could hold a bottle when the nephew was an infant.

        • Cece says:

Loved the story, VJ. 🙂 [big grin]
