WHAT IS “FRANKENSTEIN”?

In 1818, 20-year-old Mary Shelley published her first novel “Frankenstein, or, The Modern Prometheus” at a time when there was much interest in the scientific community in “galvanism”, a term coined by Allesandro Volta to refer to Luigi Galvani’s 1780s’ experiments when he discovered that electricity could make a dead frog’s muscles twitch. Indeed, Mary Shelley mentioned galvanism in an 1831 preface to her novel: “Perhaps a corpse would be re-animated; galvanism had given token of such things: perhaps the component parts of a creature might be manufactured, brought together, and endued with vital warmth.”

It’s a bit of a stretch for me to think that young English Mary took direct inspiration from Italian Galvani’s experiments, and I think you will agree that his influence was indirect if you take a look at the experiments that were going on in Great Britain at the time: The Real Electric Frankenstein Experiments of the 1800s (Ewwww!)

Amal got it right. He bet $7,999 and finished with $15,999.

Lisa also got the correct answer. She bet $1,500 and finished with $16,100.

Doug came up with “The Strange Case of Dr.Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” and lost his $14,601 bet. That left him with $199 and made Lisa O’Brien the new Jeopardy! champ.

Lisa played well today especially Amal despite him not being able to get into the lead. Still I definitely want Lisa to repeat her win tomorrow. Frankenstein has been made into a couple of good games, one of which was Frankenstein Through the Eyes of the Monster. Still though I wouldn’t touch any pheremone either as that is not my department either. VJ I always thought that the newcomers with the highest score will have a good shot at getting final but what happened?

  2. VJ says:

Here’s a good thing to remember — like Edgar Allan Poe, Robert Louis Stevenson lived a short life. Poe lived his in the first half of the 19th century and RLS lived his in the last half.

On another note, I wouldn’t have touched that moth pheromone clue with a 10-foot pole either, 😂

VJ, do you remember my opinion on stay-at-home moms/dads? Glad Lisa won today. Shows I was right. Hope she repeats tomorrow.

      • VJ says:

Yes, Jacob, I definitely thought of your opinion and gave Lisa high chances of winning today. Too bad she didn’t bet more in FJ though 💲💲💲

        • Quinn says:

Yeah but I can see the logic in her wager. She wanted to lock Amal out however if on a triple stumper Doug wagered to cover her (as he did) she could’ve won.
