Final Jeopardy: 19th Century Americans (3-24-16)
The Final Jeopardy question (3/24/2016) in the category “19th Century Americans” was:
In 1872 he wrote his thesis “Diseases of the Teeth” & soon after moved west to a drier climate for his health.
2x champ Claudia Stucke has now won $30,600. Her challengers today are these two players: Sarah Thompson, from Rochester, NY; and Vivek Srikrishnan, from State College, PA.
Round 1 Categories: The First Millennium – Sports Shorts 2015 – Physiology – Boozin’ It Up – Triple Rhyme Time – Final Resting Places
Sarah found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “First Millennium” under the $800 clue not long after the chat. She was in second place with $3,800, $1,400 less than Vivek’s lead. She bet $1,000 and she was RIGHT.
In one of their first known attacks, in 793 these raiders looted & burned a monastery in Northern Britain. show
Vivek finished in the lead with $8,400. Sarah was second with $6,600 and Claudia was last with $1,800.
Round 2 Categories: Opera at the Met – They Directed Themselves – It’s in the Book – National Anthems – Limited Time Only – “Call” Now
Vivek found the first Daily Double in “National Anthems” under the $1,600 clue on the 9th pick of the round. In the lead with $12,400, he had $2,600 more than Sarah in second place. He bet $2,000 and he was RIGHT.
First performed in 1745, it has been quoted & arranged by composers including Haydn & Britten. show
Vivek found the last Daily Double in “They Directed Themselves” under the $1,200 clue. There were 7 clues left after it. He was in the lead with $18,000 now, $7,000 more than Sarah in second place. He bet $4,000 and thought it was Barbra Streisand. That was WRONG.
“By the Sea” (She directed her husband, too). show
Vivek finished in the lead with $15,200. Sarah was next with $13,000 and Claudia was in third place with $9,000.
Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.
John Henry “Doc” Holliday graduated from the Pennsylvania College of Dental Surgery on March 1, 1872. His thesis title is shown (as well as everyone else’s) in a list of the graduating class here. Later that year, Holliday was diagnosed with tuberculosis. An article entitled “The Real Doc Holliday” on Today I Found Out.com recounts a story originally told by Bat Masterson as an alternative or additional motive for Holliday’s move out West but still concludes that his medical condition was a likely factor. He died from tuberculosis in 1887 at age 36.
Wikipedia has a list of many actors who portrayed Doc Holliday in film and on television.
Claudia came up with Colgate. She lost her $4,001 bet and finished with $4,999.
Sarah got it right. She added $3,999 to her score to finish with $16,999.
Vivek thought it was Walter Reed. He lost $10,801 and landed in third place with $4,399, so Sarah Thompson is the new Jeopardy! champ.
The last clue on the board was in “Limited Time Only” and it was also the last triple stumper for the players:
($2000) – William Walker led a military takeover of this Central American country & was its “President” for 10 months in the 1850s.
Note from VJ – Cece and I learned the answer to this clue in the comments a year ago on 3-23-15. It was mentioned that the last time it was a clue was in 2010, when it was also a Triple Stumper.
2 years ago: TWO of the players got this FJ in “Adapted from Antiquity”
It begins with a vow to an ancient god & ends with “if I transgress it & swear falsely, may the opposite of all this be my lot.” show

VJ—my word was as good as my promise of a year ago: I remembered the crazy William Walker! And the bf was impressed ’cause he couldn’t remember. I sentenced him to slave in the kitchen tonight. :):)
Vivek, what a cool name.
Great, Cece! That was pretty awesome to see that clue.
I agree that Vivek is a cool name 🙂 He was a good player too. I credit his quick play with the DJ round being completed in spite of those video opera clues. Holy cow!
Those opera clues were horrid, VJ, and then Alex had to comment a couple of times to prolong it even more.
I know, Rhonda! First they read the long clues, then came the singing, then opera appreciation by Alex.. He could and should have saved that for the end of the round.
That’s so awesome that you and VJ remembered, Cece! I hope you wouldn’t have sentenced me to the kitchen for not knowing lol!
Just to dry the dishes Rhonda, maybe?… Lol. The thing is the bf also learned about William Walker at the same time VJ and I did. He just forgot it. 🙂
Yes, VJ, I too think Vivek was a great player and I wanted to see him play again. Oh well.
I agree with you both on that Opera category—besides them reading the long clues before singing, Placido Domingo had to e n u n c i a t e e v e r y w o r d. Yikes!
Agreed, Cece, just to dry the dishes lol.
I thought Vivek was such a good player that I forgot that he didn’t win yesterday lol.
Air dry is healthier. I’m sure you two would have more fun hanging out.
Can anyone tell me what was the answer to the “hornitos” question on tonight’s show?
Boozin’ It Up ($600) – Made from pure agave, Hornitos says it was founded on this country’s Independence Day.
What is Mexico? (Vivek)
pretty easy fj today.. If you know a lot about history of the west or just history..
All should get it. 1 might not get it.
Great link. Lol: self-proclaimed.
