WHO IS WILLIAM OF ORANGE?

The Glorious Revolution in 1688 occurred when Netherland’s William of Orange was invited to invade England by enemies of Catholic King James II. James succeeded to the crown after the death of his brother, Charles II, who, although Catholic, promoted religious tolerance. James lost popular support mainly through his efforts to establish Catholic dominance. William of Orange was James’ son-in-law, married to James’ daughter, Mary, who was next in line to the English throne. Both were Protestants. When James and his wife had a son, James’ enemies took action to prevent a potential Catholic heir. Upon learning of William’s imminent invasion, James II fled the country. The event is also known as the Bloodless Revolution as it was accomplished without bloodshed. William and Mary were crowned joint rulers in 1689. She died in 1694. William died in 1702 and was succeeded by Mary’s sister, Anne.

Nick went with William the Conqueror. He lost $4,201 and finished with $1,199.

Jannette had the Conqueror, too. That cost her $8,000 and left her with $1,600.

Stephen thought it might be Charles II. He only lost $150 and won the game with $20,250. Stephen’s 4-day total is $100,881.

It would have been hilarious if somebody wrote PRINCE HARRY for the Final.

  2. Howard says:

History/monarchies not my thing. I gave the Dutch William a brief thought but went with the Conqueror instead.

Those stumpers were all brain-crushers, except maybe “The Lost Symbol” one.

Ouch–Nick was 35 years too late with Secretariat. I was down near the rail at Belmont in 1973 when Big Red won the Triple Crown by 31 lengths. And the longshot in the 5-horse field barely nosed out another for 2nd place at the wire, costing me a winning $2 exacta bet. Earlier, I lost 2 bucks on Secretariat when he was upset by a horse named Onion. During the post parade before that race, I had a sneaking suspicion that Onion would make me cry!

  3. Rick says:

A tough FJ, and I never heard of William The Orange until now.

  4. Ismael Gomez says:

Just like how we begin the week, we end the week with another triple stumper as we got a tough final.

  5. VJ says:

Two clues in this game were recently seen on Master Minds —

    1. the kind of bananas that are cooked; and

    2. a variation of the Official National Languages Daily Double (they wanted the “R” language in the last round)

    • JP says:

I definitely noticed the “R” language for this reason. Coincidence?

If I’m not mistaken Sony owns Game Show Network too. Probably some sharing of writers or a clue bank between Master Minds and Jeopardy. Just a thought.
