Final Jeopardy: Singers (2-26-14)

The Final Jeopardy question (2/26/2014), in the category “Singers” was:

The only solo artist to have 5 Billboard No. 1 albums before the age of 19.

Current champ Arthur Chu has racked up winnings of $158,000 thus far over 6 games, including 3 runaways and one tie. His competition today comes from: Stephen Mellis, from Washington, DC; and Lindsey Stallings, from Carmel, IN.

Stephen found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Up” under the $600 clue. He was in third place with $1,800, $3,800 less than Arthur’s lead. He made it a true Daily Double and he was RIGHT.

In their military careers, Princes William & Harry were both primarily trained as pilots of these. show

Arthur finished in the lead with $7,000. Stephen was second with $5,000 and Lindsey was last with $3,600.

Arthur found the first Daily Double in “Literary Doctors” under the $2,000 clue on the second pick of the round. He was in the lead with $8,200, $3,200 more than Stephen in second place. He made it a true Daily Double and he was RIGHT.

Shipwrecked in the South Seas, Edward Prendick stumbles on this island of this doctor who’s creating human-animal hybrids. show

Arthur found the last Daily Double in “Political Convention Keynoters” under the $1,200 clue. In the lead with $27,200, he was $17,200 ahead of Lindsey in second place. He bet $7,000 and thought it was Rehnquist. That was WRONG.

Republicans, 1944: this Californian future Chief Justice. show

Arthur finished in the lead with a runaway $22,600. Lindsey was next with $10,800 and Stephen was in third place with $7,800.

NONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS JUSTIN BIEBER?

“As expected, Justin Bieber achieves his fifth No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 as “Believe Acoustic” debuts atop the list with 211,000 sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan. With the arrival, he becomes the only artist to have notched five No. 1 albums before turning 19 years old. (He turns 19 on March 1.) He was previously tied with Miley Cyrus, who had also claimed four leaders before she turned 19.” (Billboard Biz)

Stephen wrote down “Shirley Temple.” That cost him $5,000 and he finished with $2,800.

Lindsey thought it was Britney Spears. She lost $6,000 and finished with $4,800.

Arthur thought it was Britney, too. He only lost $600 on this one so he won the match with $22,000. His 7 day total is $180,000.

Very interesting. That 5th Bieber album is very recent — it was released on 1/29/13.  The record is only a year old. Interesting that the contestants thought of Britney before Miley. But both Miley and Bieber haven’t been getting a whole lot of positive press since then! Speaking of Billboard, besides starring as Dr. James Kildare from 1961 to 1966, Richard Chamberlain had a No. 10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 with the show’s theme song, “Three Stars Will Shine Tonight.”

I should have mentioned in the recap that Trebek made the infamous Ken Jennings reference today. “Is it too soon to start making Ken Jennings comparisons?”

He’s putting the whammy on Arthur so john blahuta may be right that Arthur’s time is getting short, and Tom Clark may get his wish.

    • marlow says:

yes, it’s much too soon to make Ken Jennings comparisons, Trebek. Arthur would have to win like 12 more games to beat Dave Madden’s record before he could even begin to think of Jennings.

    • john blahuta says:

although i intend to stay around for another while, i don’t think i will see ken’s record broken in my lifetime. yes, he was smart, good strategy, betting and all. but there were a huge number of coincidences involved in his 74 wins. so…no way, jose!

  2. Tom Clark says:

Well, once again the great Arthur “He Who Knows Everything” Chu didn’t know the FJ and I did.

There’s so much to dislike about the great Chu, but I think what I dislike the most is the way he shoots that dirty look over at anyone who has the gall to ring in before he does.

Also, when he rings in, he moves his hand back and forth to show that he rang, so if someone else beats him to it, we see he knew the answer — then comes the head turn to his left, and the dirty look. He also seems somewhat astounded, as if he’s suggesting that, “Hey, maybe they’ve rigged this against me because I’m winning too much money!” At this point, nothing about him would surprise me.

He may or may not go on to be the biggest winner in Jeopardy history — but he’s got a lock on the Most Obnoxious Contestant in Jeopardy history already, which leads me to this:

I can’t take him any more. I’ve had it. I suspect I’m not the only one, too. The ratings may not plummet, but I bet they go down as the Reign of Chu goes on.

So I’ll check in here at Fikkle Fame every day, waiting to read that the sociopath finally lost and Jeopardy is again a Chu-free zone — then I’ll return to watching.

    • john blahuta says:

again, i have a very strong feeling that today will be the end of his reign.

    • Umadbro says:

Agree the looking over (especially at this point in his run) isn’t a classy move but how can you hate him to the point that you won’t watch the show?

The ratings will be boosted if anything which you should know since you are smarter than he who knows everything

  3. BOB BARNES says:

It sure sounded like Chu said Dr. Monroe and not Moreau.

  4. jacobska says:

Am I the only one to notice “occurred” was misspelled in the last clue before the break leading into double jeopardy?

  5. john blahuta says:

my guess would be that the show might already have been taped when the fifth album was released. but then there was that 3 week break. i am surprised though. although – or maybe because – i really dislike bieber, he was my first and only guess. arthur now almost leads the toc money list (1.001 short) and is one win away from tying ben and drew in # of wins. i have a feeling however that the eighth game tomorrow will be the end for him. just a hunch…..a very strong one at that!

but for now the energizer bunny goes on…despite that 7K hit on the dd. but then the previous dd made up for it i guess..

    • john blahuta says:

ok, i was already wondering…..and bieber: triple ugh!!!

      • vj says:

Idly wondering how Bieber and Miley would have made out if they were on the music scene in the 60s. There were some teen idols with questionable talent back then too. Bieber might have made out okay. Miley probably not so much. And that’s pretty funny since she actually has more talent than Bieber.

        • john blahuta says:

the 60s changed pop history forever, and not only as far as music is concerned. when you listen to some of today’s “artists” you can’t help but think of blasphemy of them being mentioned together with the beatles, dylan etc, and i mean etc for several pages….

        • vj says:

I totally agree that 60s music was incredible but there was also a fair share of recording careers based just on the person looks, like Fabian. Then there were the TV and film stars capitalizing on the popularity of the likes of Sal Mineo, Shelley Fabares, Paul Petersen and many others. Dr. Kildare as I mentioned and Johnny Crawford is another — the Rifleman’s son. 🙂
