The Final Jeopardy question (2/25/2015), in the category “Languages” was:

3x champ Dava-Leigh Brush ran away with the game yesterday and brought her winnings up to $31,501. Today she is up against these two players: Laura Gallo, originally from Brooklyn, NY; and Michael Camiel, from Lutherville, MD

Round 1: Michael found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “The Liberty Bell” under the $1,000 clue before the first break. He was in second place with $1,400, $1,200 less than Dava-Leigh’s lead. He made it a true Daily Double and he was RIGHT.

WHAT ARE LOUISIANA AND MAINE?

According to wikipedia, as of 2011, Louisiana French is spoken at home by an estimated 150,000 to 200,000 people. “In 1968, there was an estimated one million native French speakers in Louisiana.”

About 3.73% of Maine’s total population speaks New England French. Wikipedia’s page shows the distinction between those who know French and those who speak it at home.

American FactFinder has detailed data by state on all languages spoken in the USA. This link goes to the page with Louisiana and Maine on it.

Michael wrote down LA & WI. He bet and lost it all.

Dava-Leigh thought it was Louisiana & Michigan. She lost her $4,500 bet and finished with $3,700.

Laura wrote down Louisiana & Florida. She lost her $3,801 bet and finished with $8,799, more than enough to win the match and make her the new champ.

According to Wikipedia??? Vermont is a french word meaning green mountain. Vermont is closer to Montreal than Maine. Bienvenue a Vermont. Maine speaks New England French? What’s that supposed to mean? Je ne comprends pas!

If you check the footnotes on Wikipedia, you can always find where they got their info from (though the links may not take you to the exact page). I put in the link to the exact page on the Factfinders info that pertains to Louisiana and Maine.

As for the use of the term New England French, it came from this book.

FYI, the state of Maine has a much longer border with the Canadian province of Quebec than Vermont or New Hampshire.

I got all 3 DDs — first one — 1920 reminded me of the first episode of Boardwalk Empire and that was highlighted in it. second – well, big deal, I am always reading quotes :-D.

third – he was in the news a lot over the schoolgirl kidnappings, but I already knew it from a First Ladies of Africa list. His wife’s name is Patience. Goodluck and Patience. A uniquely named couple.

    Here’s a couple the players got that I didn’t —
$800 Movies with Subtitles – The second Nicolas Cage film titled this is subtitled “Book of Secrets”
$2,000 Tennis ‘E’ – A World No. 1 & winner of 6 grand slam singles titles in the 80s & 90s, this Swede was inducted into the Ithof in 2004

And here’s one quadruple stumper, the 4th person being me.
$200 – Tableware Included: Often yellow or pink, the wool type of this material is used as a thermal insulator.

There goes Dava-Leigh streak. Congrats to Laura.

This no triple solve thing is getting to be really annoying. I got them DD’s too VJ. The 1st one, I focused on year 1920, 2nd one too easy — “First do no harm” (part of the Hippocratic Oath or not), the 3rd one I took a wild guess based on the word “big.”

    OK, today’s game was aggravating.

The guy in the middle wasn’t very bright. I think they’re back to doing what they did last year, i.e., putting on really dumb men to compete against some relatively strong women.

Now, if I may speak bluntly, over the past 30+ years there have been many times when I’ve thought Alex Trebek was out of his depth as the quizmaster on this show, and today I thought it again.

When the question was given, “What’s the Bismarck?” I think it’s a near certainty she was thinking of the ship that sank in 1940. This didn’t seem to even occur to Alex, who said, “Well, I don’t think he was known as THE Bismarck,” or something like that.

It doesn’t matter, because she lost, anyway (I guess her doohickey stopped working.)

      his “waiting for godot” answer

      lolololol

    • VJ says:

The way that Bismarck clue was phrased “this Prussian was sunk,” obviously made the ship jump into her mind, buzz in and say that. Her reply was in the form of a question and had the answer in it so that little gaffe was no big deal and I thought it was nice that Alex’ quip gave her a laugh.

FYI, Dava-Leigh left you a comment about her medal LINK

    @jacob
if and when you get a chance to review today’s game i would like to get YOUR opinion about today’s episode!
i hope you are having a great time in California!!!

  6. john blahuta says:

this is going to teach me a lesson! i should have stuck with my initial prediction of zero!! they could not figure it out logically: which (also) french speaking country borders the us > which part of that country speaks french > what is the closest u.s. state to that area.

so far 4/9 this week, a vast improvement over last week’s 20%. but it took a real smart category to get 2 right yesterday. “die hard”…. THAT at least 2 got right, not even 3….

a total of 26.600 accumulated out of a possible 54.000, not counting any dd amount. deducting the 1.400 a total of 25.200 was earned during regular play, a total of 46.67% of the dollar value. either there were a lot of wrong answers or no answers at all.
