Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS BIG BIRD?

According to Big Bird’s entry on the Muppet Wiki, 1973’s Sesame Street style guide described Big Bird as “like a three-year old”. However, in Season 10 (1978-79), Big Bird’s age was officially fixed at 6 years old.

On Nov 6, 2021, Big Bird tweeted “I got the COVID-19 vaccine today!” He was congratulated by President Biden, prompting Senator Ted Cruz to complain that the Sesame Street was being used government propaganda. It was not the first time that the oversized 6-year-old canary found himself involved in politics. In 2012, then presidential candidate Mitt Romney brought Big Bird up in a debate in relation to spending cuts. Barack Obama’s campaign responded with an ad depicting Big Bird as “a menace to our economy.” Sesame Workshop asked both campaigns to refrain from using their characters in that manner, stating: “Sesame Workshop is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization and we do not endorse candidates or participate in political campaigns.”

Linda thought it was Charlie Brown (1950 debut in comics, not TV). She lost her $1,000 bet and finished with $9,600.

Matt got it right. He bet $10,000 and that brought him up to $21,400.

Charles went with little Daniel Tiger (2012 debut). He lost $8,403. That dropped him down to $5,997 and made Matt Takimoto the new Jeopardy! champ.

Good, close game and nice comeback by Matt after missing that all-in DD. The last DD was much simpler. Not that many famous brands of luggage.

I’m way too old to have watched Sesame St., but sometime in the last week or so I heard or read that Big Bird was 6 (or 6.5). Might have been on the radio. The morning DJ on the oldies station I listen to does a “Today I Learned” factoid every weekday around 830.

  2. Rick says:

Regarding FJ, the first thing that came to my mind was Dennis the Menace as per the 1959-1963 syndicated TV series. Perhaps Dennis the Menace was actually 6 1/2 years old?

    • Rick says:

I mean, the ‘Big Bird’ was never referred to as being 6 1/2 years old as was given in the clue, but rather 6 years old. On that basis alone, this should have automatically eliminated it from contention.

    • Rick says:

Upon further checking, Dennis the Menace in the comic strip was 5 years old so I think that I was pretty close.

  3. LINDA RINAMAN says:

Happy birthday, Daniel Tiger! Watch our favorite little tiger puppet make his April 5, 1954 TV debut on WQED’s “The Children’s Corner”

    So, not 2012 . . . omg.

    • VJ says:

@Linda, Just to clear up any confusion, can you take a look at this article on misterrogers.org ? It is about Daniel Tiger’s 1954 debut — Daniel Striped Tiger, the puppet. Near the end of the page under “The Legacy Lives On”, it says:

“Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood is an animated program based on Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood that debuted on PBS in 2012. The star of the series is 4-year-old Daniel Tiger, son of the original program’s beloved puppet Daniel Striped Tiger.”

  4. Louis says:

A good final today for sesame street enthusiasts like me when I was a child. I am surprised that the champ didn’t know this one I mean Daniel tiger? That was most recent and not 1970. As for the peanuts Charlie Brown was only two years younger than big bird. A decent guess by Linda but there have been a lot of Charlie Brown movies based on the comic strip.

    • VJ says:

Daniel Tiger is 4 — 2 years younger than BIg Bird

Charlie Brown is 8 — 2 years older than Big Bird

    • penpusher says:

Daniel Striped Tiger was a member of the Land of Make Believe on “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood,” first appearing in “Mister Rogers” in 1963, Just as Big Bird was a member of the cast of “Sesame Street.”

Daniel graduated to his own series much more recently, after the loss of Fred Rogers.

      • VJ says:

@penpusher, according to this article on Wikipedia, the Land of Make Believe puppet Daniel Striped Tiger was the father of 2012 series Daniel Tiger.

I wouldn’t know — none of my kids nor their kids were ever big on Sesame Street or any other PBS show except maybe “Arthur”. They only watched PBS occasionally. Because my brain is like a song tape recorder, I probably remember more of the songs from Sesame Street than they do, like “Hard Working Dog” and “The Lower Case N.” 🤣🤣

    • Jacob says:

Lou, I’m not a fan of Sesame Street. My kids were fans when they were little. They liked Ernie though. Big Bird never came up much in their discussions as I recall.

VJ, couldn’t help but think about you when the $600 clue under the “Dessert” category was revealed. I recalled discussing favorite quotes from that movie on FF & you stated that was one of your favorite quotes. Am I correct?
