Final Jeopardy: Men of Religion (2-16-26)

The Final Jeopardy question (2/16/2026) in the category “Men of Religion” was:

A 1660 book quoted Mary, Queen of Scots as saying she feared this man’s prayers more than an army of men

The second semifinal match in the 2026 Jeopardy! Invitational Tournament features: Matt Amodio, a quantitative researcher from New York, NY; Andrew He, a stay-at-home dad from Concord, CA; Alison Betts, a creative executive, orig. from San Jose, CA.

Alison found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “In a “B” Country” under the $800 clue on the second pick of the round. She had $1,000 and was the only one with any money. Alison made it a true Daily Double and went with the Bahamas. That was WRONG.

NONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS JOHN KNOX?

The religious struggle between the Roman Catholic crown and Protestant reformers was in full swing in 16th century Scotland. In an August 1561 sermon, Protestant reformer John Knox said: “One Mass is more fearful to me than if ten thousand armed enemies were landed in any part of the Realm of purpose to suppress the whole Religion.” The “I fear his prayers” quote attributed to Mary, Queen of Scots really sounds like it was said in response to that.

A month later, on 9/4/1561, Queen Mary (age 18) summoned Knox (age 47) to defend himself against accusations of sedition. Knox recorded the proceedings in his “”History of the Reformation”. Assuming Knox gave a faithful account, Mary was at least willing to hear him out. Despite her youth, she was the Queen after all, and could have chopped off his head. Ultimately, it was Mary who lost her head.

Alison went with another joke reply (these guys definitely wont bet it all). She bet nothing, standing pat on $2,600.

Andrew wrote “Who else thinks the best season of Jeopardy was …” He replied to his wrong response with a $38 bet and was left with $13,562.

Matt tried James I, presumably Mary, Queen of Scots’ Protestant son, who was also James VI of Scotland. Matt lost his predictable cover bet of $8,001 and finished with $11,199. So it’s off to the finals with Andrew He where (unlike last year) Roger Craig won’t be up against Matt Amodio!

Roger and Andrew are now a 2 time JIT finalist. It’s guaranteed that Andrew will be in Season 4 of Jeopardy Masters and Andrew’s bet of 38 is the Season 38 reunion with Matt and Andrew. They both appeared in Season 38 of Jeopardy!
