TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS “THE BURGHERS OF CALAIS”?

In 1884, the city of Calais, France commissioned Auguste Rodin to create a monument to the 6 leaders of their city who volunteered to surrender the city to England’s Edward III. In French, it’s “Les Bourgeois de Calais”. The burghers were willing to sacrifice their lives to end the 1346-47 English siege of Calais. Rodin’s depiction of the condemned men shows the men displaying a variety of emotions from despair to resignation. Their lives were actually spared by the intervention of the king’s wife, Queen Philippa.

This video has a close up look at the monument in Calais. An interesting fact in Wikipedia says no more than 12 original casts may be made of Rodin’s works by French law. There’s a list of the 12 Burghers of Calais casts, as well as their locations.

Adriana thought it might be “The Raft of Medusa”. She bet and lost her whole $2,800.

Neilesh got it right. He bet $8,401 and finished with $22,201.

Isaac also got it right. (In case you had any doubts, Ken immediately assured us that the first letter was a “B”.) Isaac bet $5,401 and won the game with $27,601. So the ToC Finals will continue tomorrow. Neilesh is still the only one who can make it the last match.

It was another great game, and with lots of competition to boot. As for me, I didn’t have the opportunity to watch much of the game, but I still did well. Regarding the FJ, I never was an art lover so I didn’t score. In any case, it would be easier for me to remember the French wording for the painting. Well, , tomorrow’s telecast will surely entertain another exciting game.
