Final Jeopardy: Broadway Musicals (2-10-15)

The Final Jeopardy question (2/10/2015), in the category “Broadway Musicals” was:

Winner of a Tony for Best Musical, it culminates with an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

In the second semi-final match of the 2015 Teachers Tournament, the contestants are: Eric Hack from Cape Charles, VA; Kate La Riviere- Gagner, from Starksboro, VA; and Jennifer Giles, from Longmont, CO.

The winner of this match will join yesterday’s winner, Adam Elkana-Hale, in the final. The other two will take $10K home for their efforts.

Round 1: Eric found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double before the first break in “American Histor-‘E'” under the $800 clue. He was in third place with $600, $800 less than Jennifer’s lead. He bet the $1,000 allowance but did not know so he was WRONG.

Jennifer finished in a runaway $14,200. Kate was next with $6,600 and Eric was in third place with $5,900.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS “JERSEY BOYS”?

The long-running musical tells the story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons “from the streets of New Jersey to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.” It won the Tony Award for Best Musical in 2006 and was made into a 2014 film directed by Clint Eastwood.

Coincidentally, “Jersey Boys” was in the news today when the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals reversed a decision in a copyright lawsuit brought by Donna Cobrello. Her late husband ghostwrote the autobiography of ex-Four Seasons member Tommy DeVito. She believes she is entitled to royalties since the musical and other works were based upon DeVito’s life story.

Eric wrote down “Billy Elliot.” The 2009 Tony winner doesn’t end in the RRHOF and the title actually ends in “the Musical.” He bet nothing and remained at $5,900.

Kate wrote down “Rock of Ages,” a 2009 Tony nominee that lost to “Billy Elliot”. She bet and lost everything.

Jennifer got it right. She bet $200 so her final score was $14,400 and she is the second finalist.

FJ Results: 2-10-15

In the beginning of the program, Alex Trebek joked that there’s already been talk of a beard-off if the 3 men win all the finalist spots. Before reading the Final Jeopardy clue, he pronounced: “Well, there will be no beard-off.”

I take back what I said last week about Eric. He was embarrassing today. He said he wanted to be a standup comedian, but he wasn’t funny. I don’t know about that — he had me really laughing today.

It’s not easy to confuse Leonard Bernstein with Irving Berlin, but somehow he did it.

Maybe now I’ll be believed when I say that teachers are overrated when it comes to intelligence and knowledge. How can they be teaching our young when they have no idea who was president in 1944? When you throw Eisenhower out there as a wild guess, that also means you don’t know he was a general during WW2 and that it was still in progress in 1944.

tom, you are making all of my points, one after one after one.
we need to sped more money on education to attract better teachers.after all, they educate the generation that will lead this country tomorrow… we may be # 1 now, but you fall behind extremely fast unless you apply yourself really hard. before we know it we might be left in the dust by God knows how many nations. the roman empire was invincible and in no time (historically speaking) the wild, “uneducated” hordes from the north laid waste to it.

VJ, if I’m giving away too much here feel free to delete it.

I was speechless over several things in this game.
    1) Nora Roberts’ genre – children literature? Even Nora was probably surprised to learn this.
    2) 1944 president – Truman? Eisenhower?
    3) Aida – mispronounced
    4) Irving Berlin – conductor NY Philharmonic?
    5) I’m no whiz in German, but I did learn some German words are similar to American words. When you see “Gute Nacht” it is so similar to ” Good Night” until that German phrase should not call for such a long pause especially when preceded by the name “Brahms.”

Go ahead Tom. I know you’re going to let me have it and I won’t blame you. 😀

    • Tom Clark says:

Let you have it? I couldn’t agree with you more. In fact, I’m lighting your Cyberial Cigar.

    • VJ says:

Rarely does a wrong Jeopardy answer make me laugh out loud spontaneously but Irving Berlin did the trick.

      • jacob ska says:

The one that made me laugh the most was Nora Roberts. I’m a male and can’t go into any grocery store or drugstore and not see her paperbacks displayed. Never read them but you can’t avoid seeing them.

well, just ONE right and not one dd right.
jacob, i am afraid we’ll have to wait with our virtual party until after this tournament! :):)
at least jennifer was the one who got it right. she had her final spot anyway but it must hurt when you don’t advance and are the only one with the right solution, in this case if eric or kate had been correct it would not have done them any good. second semi, second runaway..

    • jacob ska says:

John, you are correct and congrats on your correct prediction. Wait until you see THIS game!

@vj, were you shocked Eric did not answer one Latin clue?

      Congrats Jennifer! Good game.

      • VJ says:

Honestly, Jacob, I decided that Eric must have been half asleep early in the game. He seemed seriously detached from what was going on, to put it charitably.

      • john blahuta says:

a latin teacher not answering ONE latin clue? THIS i gotta see! you can be slow on the buzzer or lock yourself out once or twice….one would think he should have run the category with his hands tied behind his back. maybe he took too much of whatever was supposed to calm him down?? :):)
(the 2 “V” tranquilizers : vodka or valium..} see, i’m being nasty again just because latin was one of my favorite subjects. to see a latin teacher crash like that…sweet revenge for when i crashed sometimes in that very area!
