Final Jeopardy: Movie Title References (12-8-14)

The Final Jeopardy question (12/8/2014), in the category “Movie Title References” was:

For this 1971 film, the reference is to the 1948 film “Red River”.

New champ Ann Conger won the title and $13,999 on 11/28/14, then she got a week off for Kids Week. In her bid for a second win, she is up against: Patrick Fernandez, from Irvine, CA; and Amanda Miller, originally from Gouverneur, NY.

Round 1: Patrick found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Shakespearean Who Said It” under the $800 clue. He was in second place with $3,200, half of Ann’s lead. He bet $1,200, and said Kate or Katherine (from Taming of the Shrew) but that was WRONG.

“Sure, I shall never marry like my sister, to love my father all.” show

Ann finished in the lead with $7,400. Patrick was second with $2,400 and Amanda was last with $1,800.

Upon returning from the break, Ann was given back $1,600 for her “Nick and Nora” reply on this clue in “In the Nick of Time”: In 1934 Dashiell Hammett created this amateur detective & husband in “The Thin Man”. The explanation given was the clue could have been interpreted as referring to Nora Charles and her husband, Nick. Even if you agree with that, Ann did not say “Charles” in her response, but whatever, that gave her $9,000 going into the next round.

Round 2: Patrick found the first Daily Double in “Rembrandt” under the $1,600 clue. He had been busy in this round and now held second place with $7,200, only $3,000 less than Ann’s lead. He bet $1,600 but the jokey part of the clue wasn’t ringing any bells for him. He didn’t have a guess so he was WRONG.

In addition to his paintings, Rembrandt also did about 300 of these prints from metal plates; wanna see ’em? show

Patrick found the last Daily Double in “Aqua, Fresh” under the $1,200 clue. He was now in second place with $6,800, still $3,000 less than Ann’s lead. This time he only risked $1,000 and he was RIGHT.

Of the 5 Great Lakes, it’s the highest above sea level. show

Ann finished in the lead with $13,400. Patrick was next with $7,800 and Amanda was in third place with $3,400.

NONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS “THE LAST PICTURE SHOW”?

The 1948 western “Red River” is the last film shown in the movie theater in “The Last Picture Show” (1971). AMC Filmsite’s review says the 1971 film, directed by Peter Bogdanovich, was “noted as the director’s tribute and homage to the classic films of legendary directors Howard Hawks (Red River (1948)), John Ford (The Grapes of Wrath (1940)), and Welles himself (Citizen Kane (1941)).

The film got 8 nominations at the 44th Annual Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. Ben Johnson and Cloris Leachman won the Best Supporting Oscars

Amanda came up with “Red Dawn”. She lost her $3,300 bet and finished with $100.

Patrick wrote down “Rio Grande”. That cost him $5,601 and he wound up with $2,199.

Ann did not have an answer. She lost her $5,600 bet and finished with $7,800, enough to end the string of 10 one-day champs. Her 2-day total is $21,799.

Finally, a correct call on fj. None of the contestants got this correct as predicted on CotD. This was a weird clue. Good game though.

I wonder if any of them would have known it if they had “this 1971 Bogdanovich film” in the clue.

I guess it was an okay game. I was less than thrilled with that Nick and Nora decision. Would they have accepted Nicolas and Carla for the “ooh la la, it’s good to be president” clue, or just Nicholas on the Russian czar clue? I doubt it.

      • jacobska says:

Yep. Thought it weird due to the fact she only provided their first names. Patrick did provide the last name. He looked less than thrilled about that reversal by Alex.

      • VJ says:

Can’t say as I blame him, though let’s not blame Alex for the decision. Poor beleaguered Alex, he’s just the messenger. LOL.

        • jacobska says:

VJ, remember what they did in the Roman days to the messenger when he delivered bad news? If it were me I’d say “the judges ruled….”

        • VJ says:

LOL. Actually, later after I posted that bit about poor beleaguered Alex, I was thinking that it probably was his fault for not giving her the chance to add the last name.

Even if they don’t have time to say what happened on the show, since the show has facebook, they really ought to give an explanation of some of this stuff sometimes. This one’s probably not that big of a deal, but the way it was presented on TV just didn’t work for me.

      unconventional bet by ann though.
