Final Jeopardy: The NFL (12-4-18)
Today’s Final Jeopardy question (12/4/2018) in the category “The NFL” was:
For the 2018 draft this team tried to use a parrot to make a pick; the bird got stage fright
New champ Dave Leffler, a retired police officer from Pittsburg, PA, won $33,801 yesterday. In Game 2, his challengers are: Alexander Schwab, an attorney from Los Angeles, CA; and Tiffany Brooks, a writer from Norman, OK.
Round 1 Categories: It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas -Everywhere You Go – Be Safe! – Blank News – Biographies – Crossword Clues “G”
Dave found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Biographies” under the $1,000 clue on the 4th pick of the round. He was the only one with money– $600. He bet the $1,000 allowance and he was RIGHT.
“Prairie Fires” tells how in her 60s, ruined by the Depression, she started writing about her pioneer childhood show
Dave finished in the lead with $9,600. Alexander was second with negative $1,000 and Tiffany was last with negative $1,600.
Round 2 Categories: Technology: Old & New – Songwriting Teams – Flavors – 20th Century Leaders – Female Playwrights – Red All Over
Alexander found the first Daily Double in “20th Century Leaders” under the $1,200 clue on the 2nd pick. He was in the red for $600 now, $10,200 less than Dave’s lead. He bet the $2,000 allowance and he was RIGHT.

Alexander found the last Daily Double in “Flavors” under the $1,600 clue on the 11th pick. In second place with $4,200, he had $8,200 less than Dave’s lead. He bet $2,000 and he was RIGHT.

Dave finished in the lead with a runaway $18,400. Alexander was next with $7,400 and Tiffany was in third place with $2,400.
TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.
Back in April 2018, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced their plan to have Zsa Zsa, an 8-year-old Catalina Macaw from the Florida Exotic Bird Sanctuary, reveal their team’s fourth-round pick from aboard the pirate ship at Raymond James Stadium. “Based on that description,” CBS Sports reported, “that could mean one of two things: The parrot announces the pick himself with his parrot voice or he grabs the draft card with his claws and flies it to the announcer. However, we got neither of those things. Instead, we got 30 seconds of disappointment.” When the parrot did not do anything, it was attributed by some to stage fright. PETA complained about the publicity stunt even before the event took place.
They should have watched Jeopardy! (from 1993): 5-LETTER BIRDS ($400) This largest type of parrot can be tamed, but is not a particularly good talker
Tiffany thought it was the Browns. She bet and lost it all.
Alexander got it right. He bet $1,500, finishing with $8,900.
Dave got it right, too. He added $1,400 to his score to win this one with $19,800. His 2-day total is $53,601.
A triple stumper from each round:
BIOGRAPHIES ($800) “Hank & Jim” tells of the 50-year friendship between these 2 Oscar-winning screen legends
RED ALL OVER ($1200) The killer in this Thomas Harris novel is obsessed with a William Blake image of the title mythological creature
2 years ago: Only ONE of the players got this FJ in “Authors”
Asked if he read novels, philosopher Gilbert Ryle said, “Yes, all six, every year”, referring to this British author. show

Who thinks the champ looks like the retired pro wrestler, Ox Baker?
@Albert
A little like Hulk Hogan, if the moustache were blond….😄
I really dislike the Final for two reasons: 1. It seemed more like a 1,200 to 2,000 regular question and 2. the question was somewhat gender biased, as on average, more men are into football than women. And please don’t tell me about the one woman you happen to know who spends all weekend in front of the boob tube watching every college and pro game.
@Albert – It may be a little gender biased but not that much. The NFL is very popular, you have it on TV, the net, in the papers and in every (almost) household is somebody who watches. Plus they talk in the office on Monday about it. Plus it was sort of a deduction: parrot> who has a parrot> pirates/buccaneers….so maybe a little.
@Albert, PS – At the same time you could say that a British Lit. FJ about Jane Austen or the Bronte sisters. I don’t know a single man (myself included) who is reading that stuff which in my opinion is almost autobiographic and “schmaltzy”.
You couldn’t pay me to read a novel by either one from cover to cover , yet it comes up again and again. So that’s also sort of gender biased imo.
Congrats to Dave on his second win and speaking of NFL, Does anyone want to give a heads up on which NFL team would win the super bowl this year?
@Ryan
You mean this season, but next calendar year (2/3/19)
Being played indoors it should be a high scoring affair. If I had to guess I would say it will be KC vs Rams. Rams winning by a hair.
I thought it would end up into another single player FJ! and repeating the WORST episode ever, but the first round got those challengers very rocky. With his win, he could knock Ali Hassan out of contention. Anyway, today is the big day, I hope UP wins in Game 2 of the UAAP Finals.
Yeah, at the end of the first round, Trebek said they’ve never had a game where the players were in the red the whole game. Glad they both made it out even though they didn’t have a chance of catching Dave by then.

@VJ
I am kind of surprised about the 3 Ts in the “Blank News” category. They really drew a blank there….well, I guess they are either at work and on Sunday the NFL is a big competitor on CBS and FOX. Being retired has its advantages…😉😉
I can watch whatever I want and whenever. Though a lot of offices (especially big ones)have a muted TV running nowadays, tuned to CNN, because you never know what might happen. We are not living in the most secure times, the Cold War was quieter, they just yelled at each other but nobody would push the button because both – the U.S. and USSR – would have been pretty much gone. Only real crisis during the CW was Cuba.
Congratulations to Dave on his second impressive game and for him and Alex to get final right. But that first round was almost disastrous and if those two opponents were eliminated early in final, Dave would have taken final on his own. Luckily they made a comeback. By the way that bird zsa zsa does it remind you guys of zsa zsa gabor? John and VJ?
@Lou
Well, Sari Gabor was practically only known as Zsa Zsa. Her sisters, Eva and Magda were by far not that famous and Zsa Zsa was married SEVEN times….She lived to be 99, almost 100. Her last husband, von Anhalt survived her and still is alive (he was 26 years her junior and is now 75. Zsa Zsa was on the Johnny Carson show as guest, where she ripped off his pants….🤣🤣
Q: How much does corn cost in Tampa Bay?
A: Oh, about a buck-an-ear!
William Blake was in a clue?!? OHHHH NOOOOOOO! 😱
@JJ
Just check above where VJ mentions a clue from each round. Really bad luck, he was mentioned because a book had a cover that showed a painting of his. Far fetched. If it had been a straight answer, well…but getting it this way is really a bummer!
@JJ
GOOD ONE!!
And you got the 2 correct too today !
Wow. Dan was really at the top of his game.
It’s Dave.
As I said, every police station has a football pool, so I was sure Dave would get it. CONGRATULATIONS for another impressive game and this time a runaway win. As an ex-cop nerves will/are probably not be a problem for him. If he wins tomorrow with a right FJ answer, he will bump Ali off the ToC list already (Dave is just 19.200 behind Ali), but Dave seems like the guy who might well win 4 or more games.
PS
Did I see a “William Blake” in a clue in DJ???? Oh-Oh….
