Final Jeopardy: 21st Century Oscars (12-31-18)
Today’s Final Jeopardy question (12/31/2018) in the category “21st Century Oscars” was:
Before she was 25, she became the youngest performer to receive a second Best Actress nomination
New champ James Rodrigues, a filmmaker from New York, NY, won $27,400 last Friday. In the last game of the year, he’s going for a second win against: Kevin Patterson, a management consultant from Cambridge, MA; and Jan Corsetty, a database administrator from North Potomac, MD.
Round 1 Categories: Recent Ballot Measures – Gen Med – Playing in the Band – The Country in Question – A Fistful of Heroes – Ends in “Ite”
James found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Heroes” under the $1,000 clue on the 5th pick of the round. He was in the lead with $1,200, the only one with any money. He made it a true Daily Double and took a guess with Stretch Armstrong. That was WRONG.
The name of this army guy was born when this author showed proficiency at getting things from high shelves. show
James finished in the lead with $6,400. Jan was second with $3,400 and Kevin was last with $1,600.
Round 2 Categories: Close the Case – New to the OED – Symbols – American Authors – Going to See Amman – About a Horse
Kevin found the first Daily Double in “American Authors” under the $2,000 clue on the 7th pick. He was in third place with $4,800 now, $3,200 less than James in the lead. He bet $3,000 and guessed Sinclair. That was WRONG.
He wrote 1899’s “Father Goose”; he came up with a “Wonderful” adventure the following year. show
Kevin found the last Daily Double in “About a Horse” under the $1,600 clue, with 9 clues to go after it. In third place with $7,400, he had $2,200 less than James, still in the lead. He bet $2,600 and he was RIGHT.
Leah Hofmann was one of the many actor/puppeteers who brought Joey to life in this Broadway production. show
Kevin finished in the lead with $12,800. James was next with $10,000 and Jan was in third place with $9,400.
Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.
Jennifer Lawrence, born on 8/15/1990, received her first nomination for Best Actress at age 20 for her role in “Winter’s Bone” (2010). Two years later, she was nominated and won Best Actress for “Silver Lining Playbooks.” As was noted on Spoiler Talk earlier, Saiorse Ronan, born 4/12/1994, was also nominated for Best Actress twice before age 25: Brooklyn (2016) and Lady Bird (2018), but Jennifer Lawrence was younger when she got her second nod. In their IMDB bios, it is mentioned that they both got 3 Oscar noms before age 25 (including Supporting Actress).
In a 2009 game, they devoted an entire category to “Oscar Youngest/Oldest” records. (It was in the Double Jeopardy! round)
Jan wrote down (Amy) Adams (b. 1974, 2nd nom: 2009). She bet and lost it all.
James went with (Natalie) Portman (b. 1981, 2nd nom. 2011). He bet and lost it all, too.
Kevin bet $7,201 and would have won even if he was wrong. But he got it right and Kevin Patterson became the new Jeopardy! champ with $20,001.
A triple stumper from each round:
A FISTFUL OF HEROES ($600) This title Wagnerian operatic hero is known as the Knight of the Swan
ABOUT A HORSE ($2000) In a 1939 movie, reincarnation as a horse causes him to say, “Well, here’s another nice mess you’ve gotten me into”
2 years ago: Only ONE of the players got this FJ in “International Organizations”
Between 1920 & 1939 its presidents included Leon Bourgeois, Tevfik Aras & Carlos Saavedra Lamas. show

But, Saoirse Ronan would also be a correct answer to final jeapardy, would it not? They didn’t ask for the youngest ever, just two nominations before age 25.
@Marie
It said “youngest” in the clue. If they meant “ever” or at the time remains unclear, though it does not matter. She was the youngest then and is still the youngest ever to receive 2 best actress nominations. That SR was that close was the “knuckleball” in the clue….The writers just love to put in a red herring!
Here’s the link to the extra clues, 12 of them, plus a link to all the words added to the OED in last June
We started 2019 with a VERY difficult FJ!, almost possibly a three-way zero dollar score, but Kevin put a stop and thus became the last J! champion for 2018.
Two daily doubles missed, and two contestants missed the crucial part of the clue in final when it was asking for the youngest performer. I don’t think james or Jan even watched the hunger games series or the X men since Jennifer Lawrence was Mystique in that one and catness everdeen. Congrats to Kevin on his win so hopefully he would string more wins to start off 2019 with a bang. By the way VJ and John happy New year to you guys though did you guys have a favorite scene from hunger games or x men movies with Jennifer Lawrence?
@Lou
A very HAPPY NEW YEAR, most of all a healthy one from Doris and me as well and may we not be worse off a year from now than today!! Take care my friend!
Well, the dreaded “Oscar” category!
Since the last game that Jackie played and lost, we have the 8th champ in 8 days.
DDs only 1/3 and the “another fine mess….” a TS????
I wonder if J is getting more difficult or if the “quality” of the contestants is dropping?
Oh yes, I almost forgot to extend my congratulations to Kevin!
@John B./I. And dreaded it is, because they narrowed it down.
Oh! There’s a woman from Brooklyn appearing on Friday, Jan. 4, 2019.
Are there any New Yorkers on Jeopardy this week besides James?
Just Chelsea Hill on Friday , an administrative assistant, whatever that is. The description of jobs is often more than ambiguous….😉
