Final Jeopardy: 19th Century Authors (12-13-18)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (12/13/2018) in the category “19th Century Authors” was:

In the preface to a book of his stories, he thanks a herpetologist of Upper India & an elephant named Bahadur Shah

New champ Elana Schor, a journalist from Washington, D.C., won $23,601 yesterday. In Game 2, her challengers are: Faris Alikhan, a speechwriter from Atlanta, GA; and Mary Kate Moriarty, a dentist from Dumfries, VA.

Round 1 Categories: The 12 Days of Christmas Shopping List – Get It Strait – Words for Your Dog – Other Long-Running TV Shows – “Fight” Club – Shakespearean Opera by Aria

Faris found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Get It Strait” under the $800 clue on the 9th pick of the round. He was in the lead with $3,200, $2,600 more than Elana in second place. He made it a true Daily Double and guessed Faroe & Jutland. That was WRONG.

The Denmark Strait lies between these 2 islands, one 20 times the size of the other. show

Elana finished in the lead with $4,000. Faris was second with $3,200 and Mary Kate was last with $2,800.

Round 2 Categories: Jack the Ripper Suspects – The Movie’s Characters – 1940s America – Don’t Know Much – A Science Book -The French I Took

Faris found the first Daily Double in “1940s America” under the $2,000 clue on the 15th pick. He was in second place with $9.200 at this point, $1,200 less than Elana’s lead. He bet $2,000 and he was RIGHT.

ON March 11, 1941 this alliterative act became law & let FDR transfer billions of dollars in supplies to foes of the Axis. show

Mary Kate found the last Daily Double in “Jack the Ripper” under the $1,600 clue, with just the “French” category left after it. In third place with $800, she had $16,800 less than Faris’ lead. She bet $800 and drew a blank so she got it WRONG.

This 19th century author has been looked at: later writers pitted his creation against the Ripper in books like 2009’s “Dust and Shadow”. show

Faris finished in the lead with $17,200. Elana was next with $10,800 and Mary Kate was out of the game, at negative $400.

BOTH of the contestants left in Final Jeopardy! got it right.

WHO IS RUDYARD KIPLING?

This preface appears in various Rudyard Kipling books nowadays. In it, he thanks “the scholarly and accomplished Bahadur Shah, baggage-elephant 174 on the Indian Register, who, with his amiable sister Pudmini, most courteously supplied the history of ‘Toomai of the Elephants’ and much of the information contained in ‘Her Majesty’s Servants.'” The elephant was apparently a namesake for one of the Indian rulers who went by that name.

Near the end of the preface, he thanks “one of the leading herpetologists,” describing him as “a fearless and independent investigator” who resolved “not to live but know” and “sacrificed his life through over-application to the study of our Eastern Thanatophidia.” Sounds like the cause of death was a poisonous snakebite. Yikes!

Elana bet it all and doubled her score to $21,600.

Faris got it, too. He bet $5,500 and won the game with $22,700. He is the new Jeopardy! champ.

Final Jeopardy (12/13/2018) Elana Schor, Faris Alikhan and Mary Kate Moriarty

I’m somewhat surprised ‘Kipling’ was an answer to a FJ. Kipling has become more and more politically incorrect over the years and Jeopardy tends to lean to the liberal side, i.e. : ‘Friends of Dorothy’ category on 5-10-2017.

The Round 2 Daily Double Faris got right, did he or did he not say “land-lease” not lend-lease? I guess it was too close & inconclusive for the judges to overrule.

    • John B./I. says:

      @Keith
I guess it is too close to call. Unless you REALLY pronounce it in a very distinct way, people pronounce it the same for all intents and purposes. And in a way LEND-LEASE was a land-lease, not that it would have done us any good if Germany had won…..
Even if they would have dinged him for 2K for a swing of 4K, he would have had 13.200 going into FJ, so he would have won anyway. He would probably have bet 8.401 and won with 19.201. So fortunately it would not have made him lose the game, just a differnt winning amount.

    • VJ says:

@Keith, I clearly heard “Lend” but the closed caption rendered it “Land”

Another contestant being DISMISSED, another new Jeopardy! champion, the clock resets again and again and again! How far will it ever stop?!

  4. Lou says:

Mary Kate had a lot of problems getting in the game today making her the fourth contestant being eliminated early, just like with that pediatric dentist back in November. I mean that daily double about conan Doyle wasn’t that hard to recognize as he is the author of the hound of the Baskervilles. Sorry Mary Kate but you are dismissed. Congratulations to both contestants getting final right and to Faris. Plus John and VJ if you guys are fans if literature, what books by Kipling are your favourites?

    • John B./I. says:

Not amazingly his military collections are the only ones that appealed to me. Otherwise I am not that much a fan of R.K.

    • VJ says:

@Lou, Mostly everyone loves “Jungle Book”, right? I love Kipling’s poems, too. There was a song that I loved back in the ’60s by Gene Pitney that has a line from Kipling: “East is east and west is west and never the twain shall meet”

I felt kinda bad for Mary Kate today esp when she skipped over the Jack the Ripper DD and chose the $2K clue. She lost on that and then she only had $800 left for the DD. If she chose the DD first, maybe it would have worked out differently in terms of making it to FJ

      • John B./I. says:

Yeah, the singular is “datum”, but really never used except when you refer to a “datum” in a calendar…..since you get always more than one related to the internet etc it’s always “data”. Never thought about it really. You learn something new every day, I never looked for a singular noun.

  5. VJ says:

Who’s your daddy? Little Julie watched the intro of today’s show with me and when Alex Trebek came out she told me: “He’s your daddy” LOL!!

    • Cece says:

OMG, she can tell you have a soft spot for Alex! Hahaha.

      • VJ says:

LOL, Cece, I didn’t tell her that he’s not my daddy. I wonder if she will still think that next time she sees him on TV

        • Cece says:

That was so adorably innocent. Yes, it will be interesting to see what she says when she sees him again. Maybe she’ll ask you to invite him over. 🙂

  6. John B./I. says:

Well, what do you know. Yet again we have another 2 correct responses, that makes NINE in a row. If It happens tomorrow as well, we will have 2 (calendar) weeks with 2 correct responses.
Congratulations to Faris who kept the ToC clock stuck again.

  7. Richard Corliss says:

    I’m 22 tomorrow.
