Final Jeopardy: Sports Logos (11-7-14)
The Final Jeopardy question (11/7/2014), in the category “Sports Logos” was:
This NFL team’s logo is the only one that is a plant.
New champ Charles Brower won $20,400 in yesterday’s game. Will Charles get another runaway or will one of these players prevail: Jennifer Healy, from Hilliard, OH; and Cyle Anderson, from Detroit, MI? Let’s find out.
Round 1: Cyle got the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “The Reagan Library” under the $1,000 clue, the very last clue that we thought they wouldn’t even get to! He was in the lead with $4,400, $1,200 more than Charles in second place. He bet $200 and he was RIGHT.
On August 19, 1981, an international incident occurred when 2 U.S. Navy F-14s flying patrol over the Gulf of Sidra were attacked by 2 fighter jets flown by this country. The Tomcats returned fire, downing both enemy aircraft. show
Cyle finished in the lead with $4,600. Charles was second with $3,200 and Jennifer was last with $2,600.
Round 2: Charles found the first Daily Double in “It’s All In Your Head” under the $2,000 clue. He was in the lead in a big way now with $15,200, $8,600 ahead of Jennifer in second place. He bet $2,000 but did not know, although he gave it a last minute shot with “brachial”. That was WRONG.
Your eardrum would rupture if this tube did not open when air pressure changes suddenly due to varying altitude. show
The next clue Charles chose was the last Daily Double in “Ages & Eras” under the $2,000 clue. His lead was diminished by $2,000 so he now had double Jennifer’s score and there were still 2 categories left. He bet $2,000 again and thought it was the Gold, Silver and Bronze Ages. That was WRONG.
While organizing antiquities at a museum, Christian Thomsen came up with these 3 “ages” to arrange the displays. show
Charles finished in the lead with $12,400. Jennifer was next with $8,600 and Cyle was in third place with $4,200.
Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.
WHO ARE THE SAINTS or WHAT IS THE FLEUR-DE-LIS?
Right after Jennifer’s response was revealed, Alex said they were accepting the plant or the team’s name.
“The New Orleans Saints famously introduced its iconic fleur-de-lis logo upon their inception in 1967. This distinctive logo is instantly recognizable, and brilliant in its simplicity. For as much as Who Dat Nation loves the time-honored fleur-de-lis, let us not forget that there have been many different official variations of the classic logo. Some of these logos have been used for merchandising and some have been on the team uniform, but all have a unique place in Saints history.” (A Brief History of Saints Logos)
Cyle wrote down “Arrg!” He lost his $3,000 bet and finished with $1,200.
Jennifer had “fleur de lis”. Her $8,401 bet brought her up to $17,001.
Charles wrote down “the vine”. He lost $4,900 bet so he landed in second place with $7,500. So Jennifer Healy will be the returning champ after the 2-week Tournament of Champions that begins on Monday.
Jennifer is a training system manager. She talked about her love of baseball during the chat and how she has seen all 30 teams play in person. Her favorite teams growing up was and still is the Cleveland Indians but she also loves the L.A. Dodgers now.
2 years ago:: Only ONE of the players got this FJ in “DISASTERS”
In 2012 the National Postal Museum marked the 75th & 100th anniversaries of these 2 disasters with an exhibit called “Fire & Ice”. show

The answer that Jennifer gave should not have been accepted. It was clearly put as “this nfl team”. Shouldn’t even be a second thought, it was wrong.
another botched jeopardy any way you look at it. does anyone check what consequences the phrasing of the fj clue can have? after all, it is deciding the game (or the amount if it is a runaway).
I just don’t get it. Jep can be incredibly tough on mispronunciations but they accept a question that doesn’t respond properly to the answer. Team means Saints, or New Orleans. I’d feel quite cheated had I been the defending champ.
Hold on – you can disagree with the judges all you want – but ‘fixing the game’? I can assure you that there is no ‘fix’.
The New Orleans Saints did not waste any time posting on their website that they were mentioned on Jeopardy tonight.
Their PR people even have the Jeopardy clip on their website already. That was quick.
Vocabulary.com and thefreedictionary.com define the fleur-de-lis as a plant. So I really don’t know what the real answer is. In other places on the internet it is defined as a type of Iris.
If all of us went together to see the New Orleans Saints play a game perhaps they would give us a correct answer. LOL
An iris is a plant. Maybe you just want an excuse to go to New Orleans. LOL
Yep. I rank it up there with “perhaps fittingly.” J needs new clue writers and judges.
Jennifer didn’t bet to win on the triple stumper in the two thirds game. Nonetheless, she got FJ! right and the other two didn’t
sorry, aaaa, she did NOT get it right. if they would have docked her for a wrong answer – as they should have- charles would (and should) have won. as far as i am concerned, charles won the game.
I really don’t understand their exceptions sometimes…..the clue asked for the NFL team.
Same here. Consider me astonished.
Agreed. For those on social media (I am not), is there a way to contact Jeopardy regarding this? It’s not fair!
Their website says for judgement calls or material a letter has to be mailed. By the time it gets there the contestants may be long gone!
The complaints are already rolling in on their facebook page, ABC —
the clue asked for the team
the fleur-de-lis is a symbol, not even an actual plant
I doubt the facebook complaints are going to do any good if the website says it has to be written in and I would assume that Charles could challenge that result if he was so inclined.
I think Jeopardy really needs to post its rules online.
next thing you know they would have accepted the bourbon royal family….
they asked for the TEAM in j, not the plant. they only said the LOGO is a plant. so technically fleur de lis was wrong !
The weird part is that none of the contestants wrote an NFL team name. So I’m really baffled.
I could go along with it being either/or if there was not an apostrophe s after the word team.
you are absolutely correct. two characters less ( the ‘ and the s and both answers would have been acceptable. who is writing the clues?? 8 year olds???
i almost forgot: since it is friday i wish everybody a safe , nice and happy weekend!
Same to you.
During Charles’s interview, he said that he can say the alphabet backwards and skip the vowels. Well, guess what? I can do it too!
His speed was 11 seconds. What’s yours?
PS – I don’t think that his 11 seconds had much to do with the 3 clues that didn’t get shown in DJ. I chalked that up to that video Reagan Library category, with all those long clues!
you are evading the answer…:):):) what is your speed???????????
I really don’t have a speed.
fleur-de-lis. how easy can it get. and the wording in the nyt was nothing like the fj clue. ironic that the lady got it.should have bet everything though, considering the many “tie offers” we had lately.
congratulations and i wonder whether the guys ever heard the term american football.
agaion 2 misses on the dd clues! all 3 were easy and fj was a christmas gift.
where do they come up with some of those players??? $200 bet on the reagan library? ygbkm!!! jennifer won even w/o a dd. enough said.
Why is it ‘ironic’ that the lady got it right? Can’t girls be football fans?
VJ, I warned you that the online CotD may not have been complete. They did it to us again. C’est la vie!
Interesting that it was the female contestant that was the only one who got this correct.
so DOUBLE congrats to jennifer!!
not complete? it was phrased completely different !
It had the first three words “this NFL team’s.” Someone periodically drops off part of the clue online. Weird!
too bad that we have to rely on the nyt to have a CotD talk! they have been more than sloppy lately.that’s what happens when somebody has a “monopoly”. they can do whatever they want.
It is only the online version of the NYT that continually has errors. The newspaper print version normally has the complete clue correctly. unfortunately I did not get the newspaper today.
