Final Jeopardy: Children’s Lit (11-6-15)

The Final Jeopardy question (11/6/2015) in the category “Children’s Lit” was:

As she arrived at the house of her new employer, “the wind seemed to catch her up into the air and fling her” at the door.

New champ Mike Barrett won $20,801 yesterday. Today he takes on these two players: Sadie Iverson, from Ventura, CA; and Laura Ashby, from Marietta, GA. Whoever wins this match won’t be back for 2 weeks!

Round 1: Mike found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “One Direction” under the $1,000 clue. He was in the lead with $1,800, $800 ahead of Sadie in second place. He made it a true Daily Double and thought it was Northwest. That was WRONG.

Laura finished in the lead with $2,800. Sadie was second with $2,600 and Mike was last with $1,600.

Round 2: Laura found the first Daily Double in “European Landmarks” under the $2,000 clue. She was in the lead with $12,800, $4,800 more than Mike in second place. She bet $3,000 and she was RIGHT.

Sadie found the last Daily Double in “Gems & Jewelry” under the $2,000 clue. In third place with $7,400, she was $200 behind Mike and $8,400 behind Laura and there were only 3 clues left to go. She bet $5,000 but could not get an answer out so she was WRONG.

ALL of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS “MARY POPPINS”?

After the disappearance of nanny, Katie Nanna, Mary Poppins blew into the lives of Jane and Michael Banks: “… the shape, tossed and bent under the wind, lifted the latch of the gate, and they could see that it belonged to a woman, who was holding her hat on with one hand and carrying a bag in the other. As they watched, Jane and Michael saw a curious thing happen. As soon as the shape was inside the gate the wind seemed to catch her up into the air and fling her at the house. It was as though it had flung her first at the gate, waited for her to open it, and then had lifted and thrown her, bag and all, at the front door. The watching children heard a terrific bang, and as she landed the whole house shook.” (Mary Poppins excerpt)

Sadie bet it all and doubled her score to $4,800.

Mike bet $6,601 and he finished with $15,801.

Laura bet $2,601 so she became the new Jeopardy! champ with $18,401. We will be seeing her again on November 23rd. For the next two weeks, we will all be watching the Tournament of Champions, won’t we?

FJ Results: 11-6-15

Laura Ashby is an attorney. During the chat she talked about a rock musical she wrote in high school, loosely based on “Much Ado about Nothing”. Her school performed it and it was eventually published and is still picked up by schools. She talks about the play, called “Starstruck,” a little bit more in this article.

I don’t think Matt will have success in TOC. He missed 7 of 13 FJ, and I don’t think he’ll build up as big a lead against other champs during ref Jeopardy rounds.

I didn’t know that Mary Poppins was written by a child.

Holy vocal fry, Batman! I can’t believe I have to listen to Laura’s voice again in two weeks.

It is tough on the ears. I’ll just mute and read the closed caption after the TOC is over until she’s no longer playing.

I was kinda hoping Mike would catch up (nice shirt and tie, Mike!) and I really felt bad for Sadie on that last DD. Alex went say it, say it…. and I went c’mon Sadie, say aquamarine! I wonder what was preventing her from getting out what she wanted to say and I even hope it wasn’t aquamarine.

With that FJ, you just knew the person in the lead was winning this one.

41/57 here. I suspect the quality of play will be a little bit higher next week 🙂

Yay, thank goodness. the 2015 Tournament of Champions starts Monday which means I’ll be recording and not watching each same night. I will be recording and watching the quarterfinals on November 14th and the semifinals and finals on November 21st.

  6. Richard Corliss says:

We’ll see Leena, but I think the Jackson guy’s gonna win and I hope one of the champions will write his response and if he wagers everything he’ll lose. And I really don’t think the Matt guy will win.

    Dang that FJ was easy

  8. Leena says:

On Monday, I’m rooting for Vaughn Catherine being a wild-card. Tuesday, Kristin Brennan a wild-card. Wednesday, John (who I hope wins the tourney) with Matt being a wild-card (1st place of course). Thursday, Eliott. And Friday, hope Michael wins with Alex a wild-card. These are who I’m rooting for, not any predictions, but you could consider it one, although I’m using this comment as a rooting for list for me.
