Final Jeopardy: Characters in Children’s Lit (11-5-18)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (11/5/2018) in the category “Characters in Children’s Lit (11-5-18)” was:

Memories of refugees in British train stations before & after WWII helped inspire the creation of this character

New champ Jonathan Greenan, a legal officer from Prince Edward Island, Canada, won $27,201 last Friday. In Game 2, his opponents are: Mary Ann Borer, a marketing coordinator from Pomona, CA; and Gerald Dudley, a pub quiz host & writer from Jamaica Plain, MA.

Round 1 Categories: Recent Headlines in The Onion – Sister Cities – Rhymes with Mug – Poker Face – Bad Romance – Lady Gaga

Mary Ann found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Bad Romance” under the $600 clue, with 4 clues still to go. She was in second place with $3,600, $3,200 less than Jonathan’s lead. She bet $3,000 and she was RIGHT.

This novel ends with Amy & Nick Dunne reunited– sure, she framed him for her murder, but now she’s pregnant.Β show

Mary Ann finished in the lead with $8,200. Jonathan was second with $7,200 and Gerald was last with $3,800.

Round 2 Categories: National Geographic Mars – Pop Culture – Caves – Word Origins – British History – Drum Schtick

Gerald found the first Daily Double in “British History” under the $2,000 clue on the 18th pick. Gerald felt it was “now or never” so he went with a true Daily Double. He thought it was Charlemagne but that was WRONG in more ways than one.

This “Great” monarch prevented England from completely falling to the Danes in the 800’s.Β show

4 clues later, Mary Ann found the last Daily Double in “Caves” under the $1,600 clue. In second place with $14,600, she had $600 less than Jonathan’s lead. She bet $1,000 and she was RIGHT.

From the Greek for “cave”, it’s an old term for a cave dweller or caveman.Β show

Mary Ann finished in the lead with $19,200. Jonathan was next with $14,400 and Gerald was last at zero. With nothing to bet, he was out of the game at this point.

Only ONE of two left in FJ! got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS PADDINGTON BEAR?

British author, Michael Bond was inspired to create a backstory for the lonely bear he found in a shop near London’s Paddington station on Christmas Eve in 1956. He bought the bear for his wife and wove a story around it that included his memories of “millions of children who were sent by train out of London and into the countryside during WWII to escape The Blitz… with nothing more than the clothes on their back, small suitcases and a tag with their names and the address of their relatives….” More on Paddington’s beginnings on Brainjet

A clue from 2007: ANIMALS IN LITERATURE ($1000) This ursine character was discovered by Mr. & Mrs. Brown in London

Jonathan took a shot with Harry Potter. He lost his $5,000 bet, leaving him with $9,400.

Mary Ann got it right. She bet $19,000 for a super payday of $38,200 as she became the new Jeopardy! champ. That’s goes straight to the top of this season’s Top 10 payouts. The No. 1 spot has not changed since the second game of the season.

I had a lovely pair of Paddington Bear houseshoes. Adult sized. Paddington was wearing his hat and coat and had a tag that read “please look after this bear…etc” Very realistic. My hubby gave them to Salvation Army during a move. Grrrrrrrr.

It would’ve been an easy FJ!, but unfortunately, for the second time in S35, a contestant gets DISMISSED and GOT THE BOOT. Anyway, the ToC clock resets once again as Mary Ann played a very gutsy FJ wager. Hope she wins tomorrow so that she can rest in two weeks, and unfortunately, regular play will resume a week after my birthday.

Just what I said. Since you did not give a specific date: HAPPY BIRTHDAY in advance!πŸŽ‚πŸŽ‚πŸŽ‚πŸŽ‚πŸŽ‚πŸŽ‚πŸŽ‚!!!!

Gerald didn’t stand a chance today and lost out on that daily double. Just like riley Westmoreland back in September. He is the second contestant to be eliminated early. But congrats to Maryann on her big win today. I hope she keeps her big winning streak going. Also VJ and John you guys have heard of Paddington bear right? I wonder which of the books you guys read to your kids when they were young. ,Gerald you are dismissed.

    • John Christian Ambion says:

Yeah, this is the second time in Season 35 that someone gets DISMISSED, get a boot. Anyway, tomorrow is the last day of regular play before the 2018 Teen Tournament.

    • VJ says:

Well, Gerald did what he had to do as far as his DD bet went. I think he would have finished third even if he held back half of what he had at that point.

Yes I remember Paddington though I don’t remember any of my kids being big on him. None of them ever asked for one and they had Pooh Bear, Teddy Ruxpin and who knows who else, but no Paddington. One of them even wanted the Snuggles fabric softener bear.

I only counted 4 triple stumpers in this game and they were all in the last round.

Not to burst your bubble, but when my son was young (like 3-5 years old), that was over 40 years ago…..and still in Austria, so Brothers Grimm etc, exclusively German/Austrian stuff. Should have brought him up bilingual, but he learned languages pretty well and fast. Unfortunately he died in a car crash in Vienna in 2000 at age 28. The guy who run a red light at 60 miles an hour and killed him is still in prison. I’m the last of my family….

      • rhonda says:

I am so terribly sorry to hear about your son, John B.

        • John B./I. says:

          @rhonda
Thank you….but such is life . I totaled a Volvo (they are Built like tanks) on the Austrian Autobahn on my way to my (second) wedding (Fri Oct 13 !! ,1978) and walked away w/o a scratch. I hit a gas truck with about 30 mph since he lost power. The Autobahn started to go uphill and he and another truck blocked both lanes. I was able to “slow” down from about 120 miles to 30 and then BAM. There was nothing left of my car all the way to the windshield. Turbocharger,A/C, engine, all gone or compressed to about 15 inches. But the driver’s cabin was intact. The trooper told me ” You had driven any other car, you’d be dead”….
Just a little over 40 years ago and I’m still around…You NEVER know if you’ll be still alive in just 30 seconds from now….and that’s how i lived and live my life since then. Kind of a wake up call.
But thanks again, we all lose people and you never forget them. Time does not heal all wounds, but it’s getting more bearable, right?

  4. John B./I. says:

Congrats to Mary Ann. Gutsy FJ bet. ToC clock is reset again…
Does anyone’s “J archive “site work? Tried to check a few clues but got “J archive took too long to respond” since Sat when I look up “Mountbatten”, my pick for this week. Seems J has problems with the CotD post AND the J archive,,????

  5. Richard Corliss says:

A clue from Kids Week/Back to School Week October 5, 2006, Please look after this bear from darkest Peru. Thank you.
It’s now a live action and animation movie and it has two movies.
It wasn’t Gerald’s day didn’t work out particularly well, he made a gutsy move on that Daily Double it didn’t work out.
