The Copley Medal was named after Sir Godfrey Copley who left money to the Society that was used to fund the prize. Established in 1731, it is the Royal Society’s oldest and most distinguished award. Originally awarded for most important scientific discovery or greatest contribution made by experiment, the Society now alternates awarding the Copley Medal between physical sciences (in odd years) and biological sciences (in even years).
