Final Jeopardy: The Oscars (11-24-15)
The Final Jeopardy question (11/24/2015) in the category “The Oscars” was:
For films of 2005 through 2012, he received nominations for Best Picture, Director, Writing & Acting.
2x champ Laura Ashby has won $36,802 so far, in equal installments. Today she takes on these two players: Molly Hewitt, from Hollywood, CA; and Julie Adair, from Panama City, FL.
Round 1: Molly found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Newspapers & Magazines” under the $800 clue before the first break. She was in the lead with $2,400, $800 more than Laura in second place. She made it a true Daily Double and she was RIGHT.
This newspaper’s 1889 first issue promised “to get the news, to publish it instantly, whether bull or bear.” show
Molly finished in the lead with $6,600. Laura was second with $3,200 and Julie was last, in the hole for $800.
Round 2: Laura found the first Daily Double in “Wearables” under the $1,200 clue. With $5,600, she was still in second place, but only $600 behind Molly’s lead. She bet $4,000 and thought it was a suit. That was WRONG.

Laura found the last Daily Double in “Ancient Names” under the $1,200 clue. In second place with $4,000 now, she had $2,200 less than Molly’s lead. She bet $2,000 this time, and this time, she was RIGHT.

Laura finished in the lead with $12,400 and Molly was next with $10,600. Julie was in third place with $10,000 after an impressive surge.
Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.
“When George Clooney received his eighth Oscar nomination as a producer of Argo… he marched into the Academy Award record books in a very unique way. It was the sixth different category in which he was nominated, an unprecedented feat for the 24 categories currently handed out each year. It’s also a nearly-unprecedented feat in all 85 years of the Oscars…” (Deadline: Is George Clooney Now King Of The Academy Awards?)
Julie got it right. She bet it all and finished with $20,000.
Molly thought it was Woody Allen. That cost her $1,801 and she finished with $8,799.
Laura thought it was Ben Affleck. She lost her $8,801 bet and wound up with $3,599. So we’ve got us a new champ for tomorrow and it’s Julie Adair.
During the chat, Julie told Alex Trebek about her job as a virtual assistant. She basically performs secretarial tasks but she gets to do them at home in her pajamas.

I, too, am a little disconcerted and mystified by Laura Ashby’s strange terminal lilts. However, it reminds me somewhat of the people I’ve met from Northern Ireland, but exaggerated. Also, this speech pattern is similar to that of the forensic anthropologist (Emily Deschanel) on “Bones”, but to an entirely different effect, to my mind. I’ve been enjoying this blog for a long time now, and this is the first time I’ve dared venture any contribution.
They actually had a hashtag on twitter for #JeopardyLaura and I saw several articles about it last night. The HuffPost writer tried to make it into a feminist issue (like nobody would have said a word if it was a guy). Her local paper put a positive spin on it.
Nice to know you like it here. 🙂

Julie was my old roomate when she went to the University of Florida. I nearly pooped my pants when I saw her on Jeopardy. She is really smart and one of the kindest people I have ever met. Way to go Julie!!!
Hi Steve!! Long time, no see! Thanks so much for watching and for your kind words. I really appreciate the support!
I thought this was a good game. First you thought Laura was a goner when she missed that $4K DD and Molly had the best chance. Then Laura pulled off getting back and staying in the lead. Julie didn’t seem to even be in the running till the end of the second round. Then it all came down to FJ. Congrats to Julie on betting it all and winning!
I know! I know! Lots of people are glad Laura went home but ya gotta give her props for playing well.
Interestingly for his 2005 film “Syrianna” George Clooney won the Oscar for best actor In a supporting role and for his 2012 film “Argo” he won for co-producer in the Best Picture category. Talk about bookends with respect to the wording of this fj.
Then he topped everything off by marrying a beautiful lawyer-activist last year. This guy can’t lose no matter how the pie is sliced!
Congrats Julie!
Now I can stop pressing the mute button on my remote control and reading the closed caption.
