NONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.
Union General William T. Sherman’s fame as a Civil War hero rests largely upon his “March to the Sea”, considered a major Civil War turning point: “Sherman’s troops captured Atlanta on September 2, 1864. This was an important triumph, because Atlanta was a railroad hub and the industrial center of the Confederacy … and its fall made even the most loyal Southerners doubt that they could win the war.” In 1884, when Republicans considered him as their presidential candidate, General Sherman stated: “”I will not accept if nominated and will not serve if elected.” This has become known as a Shermanesque statement.
John Sherman, William’s younger brother by 3 years, was a U.S. Senator from Ohio at the time. He decided to seek the Republican nomination but bowed out by the fourth ballot. He went on to author the Sherman Antitrust Act and also served as President McKinley’s Secretary of State. See who else was considered for the 1884 Republican nomination here.
Darrin wrote down Benton, a Confederate colonel if he meant Samuel. He lost half his score and was left with $2,200.
Ryan thought it was McKinley, a brevet major for the Union. He lost his $2,201 bet, leaving him $4,399.
Elise went with Arthur, the incumbent president at the time. She lost $5,000 and won the game with the remaining $20,200. Her 2-day total is $54,800.
There were 3 triple stumper in the whole game:

I believe you’ve overvalued the second triple stumper by $19,000
LOL, JP! That’s actually very funny. Imagine if the clue was really worth that much!
Thanks for the heads up… obviously, it’s been a rough day.
I think Elise is a fantastic player. Very knowledgeable. Congrats to her on the runaway game.
I agree, azm. The triple stumpers have gone significantly since Elise showed up.
Shouldn’t the question be “What is Sherman?”? The answer refers to “this last name”.
Yes, Judy, you’re right! I misread that and thought they were asking for the general.
I’m fixing it. Thanks.
I was sharing Final Jeopardy with my husband after his rehearsal and noticed the change. Thank you.
Tough FJ today as no one knows about American History.
@Ismael Gomez Not only that, the 19th century presidential elections.
The gentlemen couldn’t catch up to Elise today but they were close with the answers given. I still think Elise could break the curse as long as she keeps with the runaway game. Ruth was not turned into a pillar of salt though. She and another woman named naomi were travelling together but do you.remember the city VJ?
