Final Jeopardy: U.S. Presidents (11-20-23)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (11/20/2023) in the category “U.S. Presidents” was:

7 U.S. Presidents were born in the state of Ohio, beginning with this man who entered west point in 1839

The Champions Wild Card quarter-finals continue today with these three champs: Verlinda Johnson Henning, a human resources & leadership consultant from Memphis, TN; Kevin Hirsh, an attorney from Fort Lauderdale, FL; and Deanna Bolio, a community outreach supervisor from Campbell, CA.

Deanna found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Opus & Operas” under the $400 clue with 3 clues left after it. She was in the lead with $5,000, $2,600 more than Verlinda in second place. Deanna bet $2,600 and she was RIGHT.

These are repetitions of a theme with changes; Paganini’s Opus 9 is these on “God Save the King” show

Deanna finished in the lead with a runaway $19,800. Kevin was in second place with $8,000 and Verlinda was last with $6,800. All clues were shown.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS ULYSSES S. GRANT?

Only 2 U.S. Presidents were West Point graduates and they were Ulysses S. Grant (Class of 1843) and Dwight D. Eisenhower (Class of 1915). That’s all you needed to know for this Final Jeopardy! clue. If you didn’t know that, Grant’s position as General of the Union Army during the Civil War was a major clue (no pun intended).

The other 6 Presidents born in Ohio and their alma maters are: Rutherford B. Hayes (Kenyon College, Ohio); James A. Garfield (Williams College, Mass.); Benjamin Harrison (Miami Univ, Ohio); William McKinley (never graduated); William Howard Taft (Yale Univ, Conn.); and Warren G. Harding (Ohio Central College).

Verlinda got it right. She doubled her $6,800 for a $13,600 finish.

Kevin also got it and he bet it all, too. He doubled his score to $16,000.

Deanna started out with Tyler and was switching to Hayes, when her time ran out. She only lost $79 but won the game with the remaining $19,721. Deanna Bolio advances to the semi-finals.

  1. Marianne Leese says:

The final Jeopardy clue was misleading. William Henry Harrison is considered to be the first president to come from Ohio, although unlike the other presidents, was not born in Ohio. Knowing that President Harrison was elected in 1840, I knew this answer was likely not the one Jeopardy was looking for but rather President Grant, the first born in Ohio and the first of seven native-born Ohioans to serve as president.

  2. Howard says:

I wasn’t sure Grant was from Ohio, but I quickly did the math and concluded someone born around 1820 and in the military would be the one, so it wasn’t that difficult.

Thought someone would know the big lizard, the May product for the teacher, and the red/blue Roman. Pretty easy. Did not expect them to know hockey legend Stevie Y. He was a big-time goal scorer.

  3. Collin says:

When Double Jeopardy started, Kevin selected the first clue because the “last correct response breaks the tie.”

A freebie for FJ tonight, but we’ll see what tomorrow will bring.

Rosemarie, your comment went into moderation because it has a hyperlink in it. That happens with all links until I get a chance to make sure somebody’s not trying to post a link to how their relative earns $600K a month or any other spammy stuff 🤣

Tonight, Nov. 20, 23: Under category A Matter of Taste was a yellow fruit or vegetable that on the video was shown opened and this white core appeared and the fruit or vegetable contained caffeine. I am curious, what was the answer and the question? Please advise, thank you.

    • VJ says:

      Here’s the clue, Rosemarie:

A MATTER OF TASTE ($800) Cacao beans, the source of chocolate, aren’t sweet; they contain this bitter popular stimulant

      WHAT IS CAFFEINE?
