Final Jeopardy: Cities of the European Union (11-16-15)

The Final Jeopardy question (11/16/2015) in the category “Cities of the European Union” was:

A Hanseatic City, this port of 1.8 million is the largest European Union city that’s not a capital.

Today is the first semi-final match of the 2015 Tournament of Champions. The first semi-finalists up at bat are Kerry Greene, who won her QF match, with and two Wild Card winners: John Schultz and Dan Feitel.

Round 1: John found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “American Place Names” under the $800 clue, the 5th pick of the round. He was in the lead with $1,200, $1,000 more than Dan in second place. Kerry still was at zero. He made it a true Daily Double and came up with Hiawatha. That was WRONG.

The name of this Minnesota waterfall is Dakota for “waterfall”; Longfellow named a native American woman for it. show

Kerry finished in the lead with $5,200. Dan was second with $3,000 and John was last at negative $600.

Round 2: Dan found the first Daily Double in “What a Beast!” under the $2,000 clue. He was in the lead with $9,400, $4,200 more than Kerry in second place. He bet $4,000 and thought it was Hereford. That was WRONG.

Bigger than Jerseys, this U.K. cow breed from its own isle produces lots of slightly yellowish milk. show

Kerry found the last Daily Double in “He was the Pope” under the $2,000 clue. In the lead with $9,200, she had $1,800 more than Dan in second place. She bet $3,000 and said Benedict XXVI. That was WRONG.

… when the Arab Spring pro-democracy protests began in Tunisia. show

Dan finished in the lead with $9,000. Kerry was next with $7,400 and John was in third place with $5,400.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS HAMBURG?

The Geographist has a list of the Top 1000 cities in the European Union. Hamburg, Germany and Barcelona, Spain are the only non-capitals in the Top 12.

According to Wikipedia, the official name of Hamburg, Germany, translated into English, is the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg.

John got it right. He bet $600 and finished with $6,000.

Kerry also got it right. She bet $5,400. That brought her up to $12,800.

Dan wrote down Marseilles. That cost him $5,801 so he wound up with $3,199.

So Kerry wins this match and advances to the Finals.

This game was rough going. John played so well on the QF but clammed up on this game.
Hopefully tomorrow will bring a better game..

It was kinda funny though that John got that “let’s kill all the lawyers” clue, standing there between two attorneys 🙂

      • Cece says:

That was lost on me, VJ—and yes, it was funny. 🙂 Weird that each of the players missed a DD (and that “slightly yellowish milk” producing cow, gross!).

        • VJ says:

I guess it was sometime last year, my daughter-in-law and I were talking about the UK’s “breakfast milk” – the milk from Channel Island cows. Very high fat content, higher in vitamins and protein than other milks. Her father came from England.

Since they call the cows on the Isles of Jersey and Guernsey, Jersey and Guernsey cows, I still think they ought to call the cows on the Isle of Man, Man Cows.

        • Cece says:

          Man Cows! Totally. :):)

I found that hysterical too. Couldn’t stop laughing!

@Cece, I agree about the game. So many triple stumpers and the scores were also low imo for champions.

        • Cece says:

Alex will kick tuchas tonight. That will make for an exciting game.

        • VJ says:

We’ll see soon enough. Can’t see Brennan or Vaughn rolling over.

        • Cece says:

Don’t get me wrong, I agree with you about Brennan and Vaughn—they are both excellent players. It’s just that Alex is too fast on the buzzer (and uses his “poker tactics” too, whatever they might be).

  2. Richard Corliss says:

Alex wins on tuesday, Matt wins on Wednesday.

WAAAAAAAAAAAAA! John Schultz, my tourney fave lost, but congrats to Kerry! You now have the chance to get a quarter million dollars! Win it for the females (males practically win this tournament every year)!

    • William Weyser says:

John Schultz won my most recent 5th version of the Tournament Of Champions in May of this year.
