Final Jeopardy: The American Revolution Era (11-15-18)
Today’s Final Jeopardy question (11/15/2018) in the category “The American Revolution Era” was:

We’ve got Maya Wright, a senior from Peachtree City, GA; Caleb Richmond, a sophomore from Bedford, NH; and Jack Izzo, a senior from San Diego, CA, competing in the second semi-final of the 2018 Teen Tournament today. One of them will join Claire Sattler in the finals.
Round 1 Categories: Writer’s Cheat Sheet – Science – What’s Cooking? – Celebrities – American Quotations – B Minus
Jack found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “American Quotes” under the $800 clue on the third pick of the round. He was the only one with money so he bet all $1,400 of it and he was RIGHT.

Caleb found the first Daily Double in “Freshwater Fish” under the $1,200 clue on the 4th pick. He was in third place with $2,600 at this point, $8,600 behind Maya’s lead. He bet $2,000 and thought it was a carp. That was WRONG.
In the mid-1960s the Coho this was introduced to the Great Lakes where it spawns in rivers feeding the lakes. show
Jack found the last Daily Double in “Government & Politics” under the $1,600 clue on the 10th pick. In second place with $7,400, he had $6,600 less than Maya’s lead. He bet $6,000 and gave “forum” a try. That was WRONG.

Maya finished with a runaway $17,600. Caleb was next with $8,200 and Jack was in third place with $5,400.
Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.
Philadelphian Betsy Ross (born Elizabeth Griscom) grew up in a large family of Quakers. Betsy was apprenticed to upholsterer William Webster as a young woman. There she met and fell in love with another apprentice named John Ross, an Episcopalian. At age 21, against her family’s wishes, she and Ross eloped and she was expelled from the Quaker community. She later rejoined the Quakers after her husband’s death. More about it here.

@VJ. Today’s win by a very remarkable and wonderful young lady from Georgia. Obviously Miss Wright is a leader in her senior class, with hopes for a bright future. Poor Caleb Richmond (a sophomore) was up against 2 seniors. Coho salmon are very common here in the Northwest, and people from NH should know something about fishing and fish.
However, Caleb is from Bedford NH (and not NJ). I don’t think there is a Bedford in New Jersey. There is a New Bedford there, however. I grow up in Bedford (NH) in the 40s and early 50s.
I was born in next door in Grasmere (part of Goffstown), but after living there for a few years the family moved down to Bedford in the fall of 1943, as I well remember. Bedford in those days was very rural and had a population of about 1800, with no high school. Today it has a population of about 22,000 and has a beautiful new high school. New Hampshire had a state law that if a township didn’t have a high school, you had to go to the nearest place that had one, in our case it was Manchester West High School, with the town paying $50.00 per head for tuition.
Transportation was NOT provided, and high school kids mainly did not have cars. I remember having to walk or hitchhike home many-a-time. Most of the people I used to know are now in the Bedford Center Cemetery. But I can attest to the fact that they were very much alive at one time. (a joke)
Anyway, if you have read this far, please changed NJ to NH for Caleb. I wish him the best.
Thanks, Taiwan Bill. I fixed that. I think that was a typo, not a subconscious error because I am from NJ. I do know the NJ town is New Bedford.
Your school story was like those categories that they had in one of the QF’s last week: We Walked to School – It was 10 Miles – In the “Snow” 😀
My father grew up in Vermont in the 1920s and 30s and his father was from a very rural area up there and I heard those “miles in the snow” stories a lot when I was a kid. We walked to school too lots of times in the snow but it was the city, not the country, and it was more like half a mile..
The only good thing I can say about Maya’s wager is that it does force the 2nd place player, Caleb, to get Final Jeopardy! right, which he didn’t, but Maya, you can’t throw away a guaranteed spot in the Finals.
@William Weyser
Even if he Caleb had gotten it right, he would not have been able to catch Maya , as long as she wagered not more than 1.999. They don’t get the money in the semis, it’s just to determine who finishes who. The most logical thing for Maya would have been to stay put. Period.
Her wager did not force Caleb to do anything, he had even no idea , if and how much Maya would wager. It was just a (Nervous) short by Maya. But better now and still winning than making that mistake in the finals.
Look, I know what you’re trying to tell me, and you are right, but what I’m saying is that if Maya had missed with her wager, and Caleb got it right with his wager, Maya would have lost.
@William Weyser
And rightfully so. I pointed out real early ,that and how Lady Luck was with Maya today in more than one way. Since the $ amount did not matter in terms of cash in a tournament semi, her best way of action, again,would have been to STAY PUT. Every time you do ANY math , you MIGHT make a mistake, no matter how improbable. So if you have a runaway and it is close and in a tournament: don’t blink an eye. Different story of course in a “regular game. If the leader has 25.000 and second has 10.000, then bet 4 grand, don’t get possibly confused with all the 9s, grab an additional , safe 4 K, because we are talking REAL money here.
But then Maya is somewhere between 17 and 18, so almost an adult. That mistake was just….well, had to be nerves/stress. I am sure she is able to multiply Caleb’s total and see that the difference to her total would have been 1.200, therefore a maximum bet of 1.199 by her. But to what end. She had the final spot secured, so don’t even bother.
@ J C A
You are not a misandrist, are you?😉
@John B./I. I am neither a misandrist nor a misogynist, but more of a feminist and equal-sided among genders. Besides, I made a bold prediction before the TT that the winner would be a woman, and if either Emma or Audrey wins tomorrow, we’ll have an all-female final. The most recent TT has won by young men, it’s time for a young lady to end the six-year drought.
@J C B
well, I see your point, imo a 2/1 or 1/2 final would maybe more interesting. I hope most of all we will have 2 good games and whoever wins , deserves it. Not winning because of blatant mistakes by others players, winning by “default” so to speak. Whoever wins, should deserve it by her/his own merit.
‘Lord of the Flies’ was an answer to a FJ the other day. I was reading about the book on the net and I had no idea the book contains many homosexual undertones. That’s pretty cool.
I just read it for the first time yesterday and did not pick up any such undertones. Perhaps I didn’t pay close enough attention. Or perhaps it’s easy to read into any book of decent length whatever you want.
@Albert & @ JP
I could not find any homosexual undertones either. Not when I was 17 and not later either. That’s why I like to read books more than just once. It’s amazing how perceptions change and come to the fore. But homosexuality was not one of them at any age.
When I was older, survival and the change of character as you get older stood out more and more. Also principles that you might find correct / incorrect at one age and turn into the exact opposite, say 20 or 30 years later.
I got such a kick out of Jack’s little doodle. Sometimes, I would draw little doodles in church and show them to my daughter. I just came across one last night that I must have done one year during Xmas season. It showed a little girl singing “Adestes Fideles” and said “I can sing in Latin!”

In the tournaments it seems they typically like to hit all the major categories for Final Jeopardy. I’m guessing we have Shakespeare and World Geography coming up. Maybe Vocabulary/Word Origins. I’d guess Macbeth, or maybe King Lear as a response. Maybe the Ganges River for Geography.
Oh my god. I thought to myself that Caleb might go there, but Jack’s costly DD made Maya’s day into a runaway, in fact, she’s the only one who got the correct response. I’m shocked and I don’t believe it.
Could it be real? I hope so.
An all-female final will be set in motion once we’ll find out who will take the last spot, maybe Emma or Audrey might take it.
Betsy Ross stitched together the first American flag in the early years and had the bridge named after her. Congrats to Maya on getting this right and I loved the responses from jack and Caleb. Besides. Maya I hope can relieve some of the stress in the finals, don’t you agree VJ and John?
@Lou, Yes, that’s what I said. She most likely just made the mistake because of stress, so she had kind of a short, not realizing there are no WCs in the semis.Who knows?
Btw it is legend but NOT historically confirmed that BR stitched the first American flag. But it was a while ago and sometimes legends are transformed into what really happened. I guess we will never know. It’s probably true, but the proof is missing.
@Lou
PS
Since we have 2 ladies (Emma, ,junior, WC,Audrey,senior,Winner and only 1 guy, Rohan, senior,WC) for the finals an all female final is getting more likely.Especially since Rohan’s bet in the quarters was rather low and he just caught the last WC.
Maybe we’ll sink our teeth into some Ruffles Loaded Bacon & Cheddar Potato Skins Potato Chips before we find out.
What we all don’t know is whether or not it will be an all girls final.
Alex talked to her longer than usual during the end credits, perhaps because of her overwager. The $1600 Fish clue in DJ! was essentially the same FJ! clue asked by Pat Sajak on 4/1/1997 when he hosted J! the night Alex hosted WOF. Bob Blake blew a lock game, overwagering by $1K, in his fifth game of his record setting(at the time) original run in September 1989(he still won), and admitted it during the 1990 TofC which he won.
CONGRATULATIONS to JJ, our only “swami” today….!!!
Congratulations to Maya. And she got lucky in several ways.
1. She disregarded the fact she had a runaway and bet to much.(Just when you thought you’ve seen it all), but:
2. She was she only one who got it right, and:
3. Caleb did not wager enough to catch her, had he been right. (Caleb covered against Jack. Why? I thought the eliminated players get the same amount of money, whether they finish 2nd or 3rd in the semifinal game. Maybe just because of pride, not to finish last in his game?),therefore:
4. She would have won anyway,even if Caleb had been right, betting what he did.Lady Luck smiled on her today. The problem with LL is that she is a very fickle lady….(pun intended)
I guess Maya had some short (stress). I hope the players are not sequestered and can contact the “outside world” before the finals. Her parents (who are probably with her) will tell her what she did wrong, though she realized that by herself already I would guess, A mistake like that in the finals….(though there are 2 games and you might have a chance to correct a mistake from game #1 in game #2, depending on how bad the error was) could/would be disastrous.
@John B./I. Correction, it was Jack who didn’t wagered enough to catch her in the DJ! In fact, he risked $6,000 and he’s WRONG. What a turn of events.
@ J C A
I was talking about Caleb’s wager in FJ, NOT the DD in DJ by Jack. And since he was wrong it didn’t matter anyway.
At FJ Jack could not have caught Maya normally even if he had tripled his money (Maya 17.600, Jack 5.400)
Caleb was much closer. Had he and Jack wagered all and been
right, Caleb would have won because of Maya’s mistake. But as I said, Lady Luck was with Maya today.
@John B./I. I hope tomorrow will seal the deal of an all-female final.
