Claire found the first Daily Double in “Bodies of Water” under the $1,200 clue, with 10 clues left after it. She was in second place with $11,000 at this point, $800 less than Tim’s lead. She bet $1,000 and she was RIGHT.

Autumn found the last Daily Double in “Understanding Money” under the $1,600 clue. There were only 3 clues still to go, worth $3,200. In third place with $9,400, she had $4,000 less than Tim’s lead. She bet $1,600 and she was RIGHT.

Claire finished in the lead with $13,600. Tim was next with $13,400 and Autumn was in third place with $11,800.

ALL of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS CHARLES DARWIN?

From This Day in Quotes: “The publication of Charles Darwin’s book On the Origin of Species in 1859 helped launch the modern science of evolution. It also created a firestorm of controversy, by suggesting that all species — including homo sapiens — evolved from ‘lower’ life forms. However, Darwin did not explicitly state that humans evolved from ape and monkey-like precursors in On the Origin of Species. He saved that bombshell for his next major work, The Descent of Man, which was first published in London on February 24, 1871.”

A 2008 clue: SCIENCE GUYS ($400) His grandfather Erasmus argued in favor of evolution 60 years before he took up the cause himself

Autumn bet $11,399. That brought her up to $23,199.

Tim bet it all and finished with $26,800.

Claire, you may remember, was in the lead in her quarter-final but didn’t bet enough to win. That wasn’t happening this time. She bet $13,201 and won the first finalist spot with $26,801.

Final Jeopardy (11/14/2018) Tim Cho, Autumn Shelton, Claire Sattler

A triple stumper from each round:

YOUNG PEOPLE IN BOOKS ($1200) Orlando teen Finn & his friends are the heroes of this Ridley Pearson series that ends with “The Insider”

NOTABLE AFRICAN AMERICANS ($1200) In 2018 a Pres. pardon was given to Jack Johnson, a champion in this sport whose 1913 conviction had racial overtones

2 years ago: TWO of the players got this FJ in “Fictional Characters’ Last Words”

They might decide to have Jack, Caleb and Rohan play each other in one of the 2 remaining semis. That way the finals would not be a one gender affair.

  2. VJ says:

Well, congrats to Claire, of course. Still, I was kinda bummed that Autumn didn’t bet enough on that last DD to at least tie Tim. Out of those 3 clues that were left, Claire got the one worth $400, the $2000 one was a TS and Autumn got the last one worth $800.

@John, I didn’t exactly “pick” that 2 years ago. I follow the same day of the week pattern– the 2 years ago match was also the first semi-final of the Teen Tournament. It shows how LOTF is a Teen Tournament go-to. Animal Farm is, too.

      @VJ Then a remarkable coincidence!

    • John Christian Ambion says:

@VJ I’m putting my bet on Claire to win the TT.

      • VJ says:

Okay, John Christian. I’ll wait till Friday before I make a bet.

This game was kinda funny in that it looked like Tim might run away with it by the end of the first round and I thought if he gets a DD in the last round, he would bet for a shut out. Claire also had a chance to take a decent lead with her DD and didn’t take it! Not recognizing those opportunities is an even bigger detriment in the finals, I think.

  3. John Christian Ambion says:

How about that? Claire’s performance outpaced Tim’s and she is now the first female TT finalist in 6 years. Looks like an all-female Finals is substantially likely. It didn’t sugarcoat the fact that Calgary voters want their 2026 Olympic bid to be dead, leaving only Milan-Cortina and Stockholm. I have a possibility that Thomas Bach would MOST LIKELY not to win re-election as IOC President because of how the bidding for the Olympics became a “formality”, whatsoever.

  4. William Weyser says:

Because of Claire’s win, this is the 1st time that we will have a female in the Finals of the Teen Tournament in 6 years.

  5. Lou says:

Happy birthday to J C Ambion and congratulations to all the contestants on getting final right. I certainly hope that the next few days of final gets easier. Don’t forget about the scopes monkey trial. John scopes was arrested for teaching evolution as well and therefore, Darwin s theory of evolution was prohibited. Also VJ and John you guys heard of Alfred Russell Wallace? He also wanted to know about the origin of species as well. I hope this will be an all ladies final.

    • John B./I. says:

      @Lou
Yeah, when I mentioned the film “Inherit the Wind” that was about the Scopes Trial. And “easier”?? With all due respect: It does not get much easier than today, notwithstanding that it’s a Teen T. Proof: all 3 got it, all except one prediction called for a sweep and the DDs were easy as well.
Just happy to see that HS students know something about Islam and foreign geography. Encouraging, especially when you see some performances in “regular ” games. All in all a very positive game.

Here’s the list of contestants in the finals of the Teen Tournament:
April 30-May 11, 2012: Girls: Elyse Mancuso, Catherine Briley, & Rose Schaefer
January 30-February 12, 2013: Boys: Nilai Sarda, Barrett Block, & Leonard Cooper
July 21-August 1, 2014: Boys: Cooper Lair, Alan Koolik, & Jeff Xie
November 9-22, 2016: Boys: Michael Borecki, Sharath Narayan, & Alec Fischthal

In the last 4 Teen games it’s been nothing but all genders.

  6. John B./I. says:

Ha, the “2 years ago” is from yesterday’s FJ….cute pick, VJ!

Congrats to Claire. I wonder if the next 2 semis will have an equally easy FJ. If not, then Claire caught a big break. Darwin’s evolution theory was prohibited to be taught in schools for the longest time. He WAS the “father” of evolution and his theory was attacked for the longest time from all sides. Maybe all players did even see already the movie “Inherit the Wind”? One of Spencer Tracy’s very fine performances, but then he was an exceptional actor, one of my favorites.

Tim and Autumn could have won the game as well by wagering more at the DDs, especially Autumn.Had she wagered 4 K with only 3 clues left, she would have won the game. There are no WCs in the semis…But then who knew FJ would be THAT easy. Ah well, when 3 play and only 1 can win, 2 have to lose…esa es la vida, , c’est la vie…I am VERY curious about the difficulty of FJ in the 2 remaining semis. Also a “well done” to Autumn and Claire making it to the semis and giving a good account of themselves there.

And finally: HAPPY BIRTHDAY, John Christian Ambion! 🎂🎂

    • John Christian Ambion says:

@John B./I. Tim’s performance in the QF played like Arthur Chu or Alex Jacob, but after this SF match-up, he was outpaced by Claire, who I think played like Lisa Schlitt or Julia Collins. Because of that, I am pretty sure that my birthday prediction would come true: an all-female Final.

  7. Richard Corliss says:

Our first female finalist since Catherine Briley.
