WHAT IS THE HOPE DIAMOND?
What is known today as the Hope Diamond was discovered in a mine in India in the 17th century and came into the possession of French merchant Jean-Baptiste Tavernier, who sold it to the Sun King, Louis XIV of France. Le bleu de France (French blue) is one of the names it was known by. It remained in the hands of the French kings until it was stolen during the French Revolution. It turned up again in 1812 in London. See PBS’s Hope Diamond Timeline for the diamond’s journey from there to where it is today– the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C.
It’s a bit amusing that it is called “priceless” when it has been bought and sold several times throughout its history. In this article, Fortuna Auctions answers the questions “Why Is It So Special?” “The most visible source of the diamond’s value is its sheer beauty. Covered in countless facets, it holds a deep blue color all the way through—due to trace elements of boron in the stone…. Natural blue diamonds are incredibly rare to begin with, and most of them are neither as bold or as large as the Hope Diamond. At 45.52 carats, it’s the largest blue diamond known to exist, and that’s after undergoing numerous recuts. In its original form, it was recorded as being 112 carats. Finally, the diamond carries an element of intrigue due to the misfortune it’s been historically rumored to bring.”
Willa wrote down cordon bleu. She crossed that out and was going for blue ribbon when time ran out. She lost $7,500, leaving her with $1,700.
Tucker thought it was the Croix de Guerre. He lost $9,599 and finished with one dollar.
Andrew scored some FJ! humor with Mastercard but he lost his $5,500 bet. He still won the game with the remaining $20,300. Andrew’s 2-day total is $72,301. Very nice!

I’m only surprised that none of the contestants came up with the Hope Diamond as that was the first thing that came to my mind. “Mastercard”? Ha! Ha!
I got a big kick out of being $1,000 ahead of Andrew after the 5th clue in the first round because I knew the name of the lead singer of T. Rex.
Their one hit wonder in the USA was one of the clips I put up on Spoiler Talk last year when we had that song title game going on
Another tough final as we got another triple stumper. Besides, nobody knows about priceless objects.
This should not have been a triple stumper. I remember in an episode of case closed that magician thief tried to steal that same diamond.
Nobody went with your gut?
I wonder if ken jennings, holzhauer, or rutter knew today’s Final.
