Final Jeopardy: Highways and Byways (11-6-14)

The Final Jeopardy question (11/6/2014), in the category “Highways and Byways” was:

The Hiram Bingham Highway, opened in 1948, is the last leg linking Machu Picchu with this World Heritage site, a city about 50 miles off.

New champ Hillary Huttenhower won $19,801 yesterday. Today her opponents are: Che Smith, from Washington, DC; and Charles Brower, from Durham, NC.

Round 1: Charles found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Of Species” under the $600 clue. He was in the lead with $8,000, $5,600 more than Che in second place. He bet $2,000 and he was RIGHT.

Charles finished in the lead with $11,200. Che was second with $2,400 and Hillary was last with $1,600.

Round 2: Charles found the first Daily Double in “Published Posthumously” under the $1,600 clue. He was in the lead with $15,600, $7,600 more than Che in second place. He bet $3,000 and he was RIGHT.

Charles found the last Daily Double in “Transportation” under the $1,200 clue. In the lead with $22,200, he had $15,000 more than Che in second place. He bet $2,000 and said “tire companies”. That was WRONG.

Bases for these are located at Carson, California, Pompano Beach, Florida & Akron, Ohio. show

Charles finished with a runaway $25,400. Che was next with $5,200 and Hillary was in third place with $4,800.

After the commercial, Hillary and Che were both credited for a prior response judged wrong, so Hillary was now in second place with $8,800 and Che was in third with $7,200.

NONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS CUSCO or CUZCO?

Cusco was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983. It is the country’s leading tourist destination. “Known by the Incas as the “Sacred City”, Cusco was the capital of one of the main pre-Columbian empires: the Tahuantinsuyo. Its Quechua name, Qosqo, means “navel of the world”, because the city was the center that controlled a vast network of roads stretching from southern Colombia to northern Argentina. See more World Heritage sites in Peru.

Che thought it was Lima. She lost her $7,000 bet and finished with $200.

Hillary came up with Arequipa. She lost $3,000, finishing with $5,800.

Charles also thought it was Lima. He lost $5,000 but won the match with his remaining $20,400.

FJ Results: 11-6-14

Charles Brower is a Sr. Managing Editor. During the chat, he talked about the PopUp Chorus he participates in that sings chorale versions of pop songs. Here’s a Durham, NC, PopUp Chorus singing “Bohemian Rhapsody”, if you want to see what he was talking about. Maybe you’ll spot Charles.

Here is the $2K clue in “Transportation” that was corrected: “L.A.’s Angels Flight is an example of this short cable-drawn cliff railway.” Hillary said “an incline” and Che said “a trolley.” Funicular was what Alex was looking for. After the judges found Hillary’s response acceptable, Che’s answer was treated as though it never happened.

2 years ago:: NONE of the players got this FJ in “U.S. Cities”

The seal of this historic New England city has the phrase “What a glorious morning for America” & the date “April 19”. show

The movie “Birdman of Alcatraz” is 52 years old. To young folk, it’s ancient history. It would be the equivalent of asking a young person back then a question about the popular culture of 1910. They’d probably be as quiet as the three were today.

The clips of the upcoming TOC showed that Mr. Chu is as dour as ever, if not worse. I’ll have to suffer through him. I’m sure the whole thing will be rigged so that Collins and Chu are in the finals, and I’ll be rooting for Collins or whoever the other guy or gal will be. I just don’t want to see anyone as sullen and aggressive as Chu win! I like it when the nice guys finish first. (And although I come off as a miserable crank online, in “real life” I’m pretty nice! Really!)

I appreciate being considered a “young folk”! It’s the Birdman’s real name I couldn’t remember.

Triple Stumper on the Birdman of Alcatraz? Burt Lancaster was so convincing in the movie too.

Another current events clue triple stumper today on Janet Napolitano….Homeland Security?

Clues like these the contestants do not even have to study for.

Charles was a good solid player. Congrats to him.

Yeah the Birdman… who is a more famous Alcatraz inmate than him, besides Capone? I was also wondering if Birdman was good enough or they had to say Stroud. Here is a site with Famous Alcatraz Inmates

I felt bad for Hillary. I hung down my head and cried over the Tom Dooley clue.

so much for my optimistic projection. i guess most people just concentrate on machu picchu and neglect the “surroundings”. (and i’ll be hocking my crystal ball…) to be honest, i just knew by sheer coincidence that cuzco is a world heritage site, so i can’t really blame the players (though lima and arequipa are not tmk, just the 2 biggest cities in peru).

at least 2 correct dd answers and the third was in the ballpark.

congratulations to the new champ and we have yet another runaway…..if that trend and the “offer for a tie” tendency continue, the “old fashioned” betting strategy for fj will soon become a moot point. decent payday though despite the miss in fj.

follow the text link in the info part — Historic Downtown Arequipa and Historic Downtown Lima are both World Heritage sites.
