TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS SCOTT JOPLIN?

In October 1901, about a month after becoming President as a result of the McKinley assassination, Teddy Roosevelt became the first president to invite a person of color to dinner at the White House and noted educator Booker T. Washington became the first person of color to accept. That barrier-breaking event is believed to have inspired American composer Scott Joplin (1868-1917) to compose “A Guest of Honor”, billed as “the only genuine Rag Time Opera ever produced.” Check out gailmasinda.com’s blog to find out how Joplin’s production fell apart due to theft and how the opera’s score disappeared, never to resurface.

Joplin primarily composed ragtime music and was known as the “King of Ragtime.” His fame dwindled after he died but he was back in the public eye in a big way in the 1970s when another opera “Treemonisha” premiered in Atlanta in 1972. In 1973, Joplin’s “The Entertainer” sparked a ragtime revival when it was featured in “The Sting” (1973), starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford. The Scott Joplin Ragtime Festival is held annually in Sedalia, Missouri, where Joplin taught piano and worked for many years.

Sadie got it right. Ken kidded that she only wrote the last name this time. She bet $400 and finished with $6,400.

Jack thought it was Gershwin, which likely requires a first name when it’s right. Since Joplin was the right response, it cost Jack $3,000. He landed in third place with $3,400.

Rowan also got it right, standing pat with the $30,000. Tomorrow, the tournament will wrap up. Today’s scores will be added to the players’ final scores tomorrow to determine the winner, who will move on to the 2022 Tournament of Champions. Right now, no one can deny that Rowan has a huge advantage but Ken reminded us that big comebacks can happen. Yes, they can and they have. We’ll never forget Buzzy going into his second final game with zero and winning the entire Tournament of Champions in 2017.

Sadie is not going to win. Her very conservative wager on her relatively meager total (vs Rowan’s total) shows either very poor betting strategy, or, just an innate nature that she is risk-averse. And, if there was EVER a time to NOT be risk averse, this is it! And I want her to win!

Wow, Rowan sure is a force to be reckoned with. Could give the superstars a tussle in the ToC.

Joplin was the only black composer I could think of from the stated era.
I think someone should have known the lake at Banff.
Surely one of the other 2 would have known LeBron’s city if given the chance. Rowan usually gives complete responses, so I was surprised they didn’t in this case. Unlike Matt Amodio, who cuts corners and gives the shortest possible response beginning with “What’s.”

Hi VJ! “The Entertainer” is MUCH easier to deal with than “Green Acres”. I loved it as the theme for the movie The Sting. Ahh – oldies but goodies….

    • VJ says:

“The Sting” won a slew of Oscars, including Best Picture, but not one for that song. The awards were handed out in 1974, the year that the streaker ran across the stage. I’ve got a collection of J! clues on that film and others from 1973 over here

Now I’ve got that tune “The Entertainer” stuck in my head. I suppose that’s better than the Green Acres theme song. lol. I had that stuck in my head the past two days because I wanted to know if Eddie Albert was singing the male parts on that. “Farm livin’ is the life for me”.
