Final Jeopardy: The Prime Meridian (10-21-15)

The Final Jeopardy question (10/21/2015) in the category “The Prime Meridian” was:

Besides the U.K., it’s the only country that the prime meridian touches that starts with a vowel.

New champ Robert Arrowood won $25,500 yesterday. He tries for a second win today against these two players: Kelly Winck, from Knoxville, TN; and Dennis Golin, from New York, NY.

Round 1: Kelly found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “The Preamble of the Constitution” under the $600 clue on the 4th pick of the round. She was the only one with any money: $800. Rather than go for the $1,000 allowance, she made it a true Daily Double and thought it was “welfare.” That was WRONG.

“Provide for the common” this; the President’s proposed 2014 budget for it was $526.6 billion. show

Dennis finished in the lead with $6,200. Robert was next with $5,200 and Kelly was in third place with $2,000.

Round 2: Dennis found the first Daily Double in “Hemingway” under the $1,600 clue. He was in second place with $11,000, $1,000 less than Robert’s lead. He bet $3,000 and he was RIGHT.

In 1928 Hemingway went to a Princeton game with this author who got drunk after the game. show

Dennis got the last Daily Double in “Veterinary Medicine.” It was the last $800 clue and the last one on the board. He was now in the lead with $16,000, $2,000 more than Robert in second place. He risked $2,000 and he was RIGHT.

The hospital has its own bloodbank and a program for local dogs to give blood. Dogs with type DEA 1.1 negative are considered this, their blood type suitable for any recipient. show

That brought Dennis’ lead up to $18,000. Robert was second with $14,000 and Kelly was last with $4,000.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS ALGERIA?

The 8 countries that the prime meridian passes through are the UK, France, Spain, Algeria, Mali, Burkina Faso, Togo and Ghana. MindFeeders.com has supplemental information on other places it passes through and more.

Kelly got it right. She bet it all and finished with $8,000.

Robert came up with Angola. He lost his $5,399 bet and finished with $8,001.

Dennis also got it right. He bet a whole $13,999 so he won the match with $31,999, a highly respectable payday.

FJ Results: 10-21-15

During the chat, Dennis talked about his public access sketch comedy show and Alex Trebek wanted to see it. “Well,” Dennis said, “if you’re in the area and you’re up at one a.m.. in the morning, then please check it out.” In his heart of hearts, Alex is a comedian so he pressed for more info and said he would try to catch it the next time he visits his son in NYC. It’s on MNN, Manhattan Neighborhood Network.

Loved the page on Catherine the Great and Potemkin. How do you find such tidbits, VJ?
Crashed and burned on FJ like Manny did today, as I knew I would when I saw the category.

glad you liked it, Rhonda. I really look at a lot of pages, but only post links to the best ones :):)

I know we don’t normally discuss WoF here but a contestant won $77100 during the regular game and $33000 on a final wheel solve for a total of $110100. Whoa!

She didn’t win a car but did win one trip. She was just a good clue solver for her winnings.

I normally don’t watch WoF even though it follows Jeopardy in my area. Glad I did tonight.

Congrats Dennis. You made watching Jeopardy exciting and good.

You’re welcome. Don’t feel bad, my prediction on how many would get it right (I said all) was wrong again. In fact, I’m 0/3 on predictions this week. Ha ha ha.

@Cece – the Metternich answer was a hoot. Anyway, I found this very amusing page on Catherine the Great and Potemkin

I only watched bits & pieces of J! tonight. I had plumbers here during the game and the idiots are still here and I’m very hungry and cranky and they keep asking me stupid questions.. Oh Happy daayyy…

Anyway, what was the clue for which Metternich was the answer? I think that last DD was laughable, c’mon. I couldn’t tell how well Dennis played but he had a nice haul. And he’s cute too. 🙂

Oh, I’ll read the page after I eat. 🙂

After they did very well in the Directors category in the first round, Dennis went to Historic Names and picked this triple stumper

$1,200 – Almost 100 years before the Wright Brothers were born, these French brothers pioneered flight in hot air balloons.

Alex said “Who are the famous Montgolfier Brothers,” and I was chuckling “not famous enough for them to know it.” Dennis picked this next:

$1600 – After helping to bring Catherine the Great to power, this military leader and statesman became her lover and they showed this pic. Dennis answered Metternich. Aside from not even being born yet when Catherine came to power, he didn’t look a darned bit like Potemkin imo.

        • Cece says:

The Metternich answer, a hoot indeed – you’re right they looked nothing alike, Metternich was better looking imo. Potemkin was funny looking in that picture, but according to the page you linked, Catherine went gaga over him, “Mama like.” LOL.

Starting with the personal Ad, that story really made me laugh. I never knew she was Catherine The Great Slut. Poor Potemkin had a sad demise.

Thanks VJ, for the clues and the Catherine page. I really enjoyed it. 🙂
