Final Jeopardy: 19th Century Literature (10-14-16)
The Final Jeopardy question (10/14/2016) in the category “19th Century Lit” was:
This character says, “let me then tow to pieces, while still chasing thee, though tied to thee”.
2x champ Susan Cole is up to $39,000 in winning as of the start of this match. Today she takes on these two players: Jerry Castro, from College Point, NY; and Keely Walker, from Glendora, CA. One of them will return on Monday.
Round 1 Categories: Scrambled Harry Potter Characters – U.S. Coins – Food Festivals – The County Line – Trailer Park – Double Y-ed
Keely found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “U.S. Coins” under the $800 clue on the 15th pick of the round. She was in second place with $600, $1,600 less than Susan’s lead. She bet the $1,000 allowance and she was RIGHT.
When it appeared in 1913, it was the first animal besides the eagle to appear on a U.S. circulating coin. show
Keely finished in the lead with $6,400. Susan was second with $4,200 and Jerry was last with negative $1,000.
Round 2 Categories: Ariel Photography – Musicians’ Memoirs – The China Cabinet – 6-Syllable Words – The Era of Good Feelings – Bartlett’s Familial Quotations
Keely found the first Daily Double in “Musicians’ Memoirs” under the $1,200 clue on the 12th pick. She was in the lead with $10,800 at this point, $3,800 more than Susan in second place. She bet $1,500 and took a guess with Bob Seger or maybe she meant Pete Seeger. Either way, that was WRONG.
2015: “Fortunate Son” show
Keely found the last Daily Double in “Bartlett’s Familial Quotations” under the $800 clue on the very next pick. She had $9,300 now and she bet $1,500 of that. This time she was RIGHT.
Bartlett’s cites the lines “O my prophetic soul! My uncle!” from this Shakespeare play. show
Susan finished in the lead with $14,600. Keely was next with $14,400 and Jerry was in third place with $1,400.
Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.
This line in the clue is from Captain Ahab’s “damned whale” speech before he dies. FranklyCurious.com has the entire speech by itself. When you read it, you’ll see that the “while still chasing thee” part was a nice choice by the cluewriters to point to Captain Ahab’s relentless pursuit of Moby Dick. The 1956 film starring Gregory Peck as Captain Ahab has a considerably shorter version which includes “damned whale.” Melville.org has an explanation of how Fedellah’s prophecies in Chapter 117 came true in the final chapter.
Anybody ever see the Tom & Jerry cartoon, “Dicky Moe”?
Jerry misunderstood and gave the author, Melville. He bet and lost it all.
Keely thought it was Frankenstein. She lost her $5,000 bet and had $9,400 left.
Susan got it right. She bet $14,200 bet so she won this one with $28,800. Her 3-day total is $67,800. How about that ship steering wheel on Susan’s shirt? A little serendipity there for sure.
Two triple stumpers:
MUSICIANS’ MEMOIRS ($1600) 2015: “Unfaithful Music & Disappearing Ink”
THE ERA OF GOOD FEELINGS ($2000) This 3-named poet wrote “Thanatopsis”, about the not-so-good feeling of ruminating upon death

Eric, do you recall our posts about 2 or 3 years ago (I lost count because we are two of the originals on FF spoiler talk) about librarians? It appears Susan is proving us to be correct so far.
We shall see what will unfold next week.

I agree about the steering wheel shirt that susan is wearing. it was a sign of good luck for her. And moby dick was my favorite book with the beginning of the line: Call me Ishmael. Also, I just don;t get why none of the contestants watched harry potter? It was also my favorite movie and book.
@lou, idk about Harry Potter. I wouldn’t expect Jerry to be a fan of the series. In my own family, there are 2 kids who were at the right age for Harry Potter fandom when it was the rage. One girl, one boy, 9 months apart. The girl never got into it. The boy read every book and saw every movie. When they were older and Twilight was the rage, the girl was into that. The boy wasn’t..
I never read either series myself. Sorcery and vampires ain’t my thing.
Ah I see. Interesting. How old are the kids now? Also what else are they into aside from Harry Potter? The sad part was when Dobby died in the 7th movie.
@Lou, There are 2 and a half months each year that they are the same age and we happen to be in that span right now, so they are both 22. One still likes sci-fi and fantasy. The other favors drama series, and of course they both like comedy.
There are times in 19th century lit when a sentence strikes me funny because it has an entirely difference sense today. In Moby Dick, there’s a part where Stubb says that Ahab is “a hot old man.” It’s because the steward told him that when Ahab gets up, his pillow is as hot as if a baked brick had been put on it, not because Ahab was a hottie. LOL.
That can also work backwards, as in Rudyard Kipling’s poem “If” — If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs… That would have ended with “consider yourself lucky” in prior centuries.

It appears that Susan is not aware of the consequences of a tie, or perhaps she wants to give the others one more chance.
Wouldn’t we all love to see the first tie-break though? I know I would.
Jerry, don’t feel that you’re the only 1 this week who has misunderstood a Final Jeopardy! clue, or category. On Wednesday, that category was State Songs, and Russ Williams misunderstood the clue by instead of giving us the state, but by giving us some sort of form of stars that are on the Alaskan flag, or a star constellation. Either way, it’s hard under the lights!
I think that Susan’s ship steering wheel shirt looks pretty good and cool on her.
