Final Jeopardy: Mythological Heroes (10-10-18)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (10/10/2018) in the category “Mythological Heroes” was:

The second half of his service to Eurystheus took him to 6 different places, like Crete, Thrace & the Underworld

2x champ Alex Schmidt, a writer & comedian from Pasadena, CA, has now won $39,679. In Game 3, his opponents are: Mary Adolph, a behavior analyst from Austin, TX; and Chris Wong, a software engineer from Alexandria, VA.

Round 1 Categories: Hello! – I Composed It – “M” & Emmys – Compound Words – History – Big Pharma

Alex found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “‘M’ & Emmys” under the $1,000 clue on the 5th pick of the round. He was in a tie with Chris at $800 and Mary had half of that. He bet the $1,000 allowance and he was RIGHT.

In 2014 Alison Janney won 2 Emmys: one for this sitcom & one for this drama about Masters & Johnson. show

Alex finished in the lead with $8,200. Chris was second with $3,400 and Mary was last with $1,800.

Round 2 Categories: To Start With, Get “Out” – Aviation – Jack & the Fiend Stalk – The End of the Road – Movie by MacGuffin – Big Farmer

Mary found the first Daily Double in “Aviation” under the $1,200 clue, with 9 clues left after it. She was in third place with $6,600 at this point, $10,400 behind Alex’ lead. She bet $2,000 and gave it a shot with “Alien”. That was WRONG.

The “A” in the plane called the A380 is for this company with a more terrestrial type of transport in its name. show

2 clues later, Alex uncovered the last Daily Double in “Big Farmer” under the $1,600 clue. In the lead with $18,600, he had $10,800 more than Chris in second place. He bet $1,000 and he was RIGHT.

He was known as “Long Tom” & also as “the worst farmer in Virginia” for his constant failed efforts to grow new crops. show

Alex finished in the lead with a runaway $25,200. Chris was next with $7,800 and Mary was in third place with $5,400.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS HERCULES?

Greek Mythology.com has a map of 11 of the 12 Labors of Hercules. The 12th was the trip to the Underworld to capture Cerberus, the 3-headed dog. The Cretan bull Hercules had to capture (No. 7) was, of course, hanging out in Crete. Diomedes’ horses that our hero had to steal (No. 8) were in Thrace.

Old clue from 2008: MYTHOLOGY ($600) In Roman myth, this powerful tot killed 2 serpents in his cradle

Mary wrote down Perseus. That cost her $5,350 and left her with $50.

Chris got it right. He bet $3,160, bringing him up to $10,960.

Alex also got it. He didn’t bet anything this time so $25,200 was the prize. His 3-day total is $64,879.

Final Jeopardy (10/10/2018) Alex Schmidt, Mary Adolph, Chris Wong

A triple stumper from each round:

HELLO! ($800) This company that has let people say “hello” for almost 140 years now has a youthful social media studio called Hello Lab

JACK & THE FIEND STALK ($1200) Buck the sled dog find the Yeehat Indians who killed his master & takes vengeance in this Jack London tale

The game belongs to him, alright. Alex Schmidt’s $64,879 is ENOUGH to knock Jeffrey Schwarz out from TOC. I hope he could do that again in the next two days. Anyway, I HATE the Red Sox to win the World Series, and so is the Dodgers. My prediction: Astros-Brewers World Series 2018.

    • John B./I. says:

Dissing MY Red Sox? Someday there will be a FJ: They won the 2018 World Series. Answer: Who are the RED SOX ?? :):):) My prediction: Dodgers vs. Sox. A long trip for each team if that happens….

      • John Christian Ambion says:

@John Yeah, I dissed your team, and so is the Dodgers. Mark my words, friend. Astros-Brewers WS would be great,, give chance to others. After all, Dodgers and Red Sox won TOO many WS and I think we should give chance to others.

        • Howard says:

I too picked the Astros and Brewers, and if that’s the matchup, then it will be the lowest-rated WS in history. But I’d still watch, even as a Yankee fan.

        • John B./I. says:

          @ JOhn Christian ,@ Howard
Care to bet a Mai Tai that the WS will be Sox vs. Dodgers????
          I’ll collect when I’m in your area(s)…..:):):)

  2. John B./I. says:

If I’m allowed to say a final word about Charles Aznavour. He was given a state funeral, with Macron, the French President present. When they lifted the coffin to take it to the grave, they played “Emmenez moi”….”Take me away” in English, one of his first big hits and one of my favorites. Repose en paix, mon ami. You will live forever through your music and songs.

    • Lou says:

I agree, Charles has lived a great life with his music and his singing. He has captivated the whole world with his wonderful voice. He will not be forgotten. May he rest in peace and his music will live on.

  3. Lou says:

Congratulations once again to Alex on his win, he still needs to win at least one more game if he wants to stay in the toc contenders list. Oh and VJ, you watched the disney Hercules and how he helped atlas and Prometheus right? What was your favorite scene from the movie. Also that daily double in aviation Mary took has nothing to do with UFOs, they were talking about Commercial aviation. I don’t know Why she took a gander with alien. It did not even came close.

    • John B./I. says:

Was probably thrown off by “terrestrial”. like in E.T The Extra- Terrestrial…:):):)
Doesn’t seem to be a frequent flyer. The Airbus has pretty much replaced the 747 which is on the way out, The 747 was always my favorite plane, especially long distance.

    • VJ says:

@Lou, no, I have never seen that Disney Hercules movie. I’m pretty confident that Alex can win another game, maybe more, but I agree with John that his low betting when he gets a DD is gonna bite him in the butt if he makes it to the ToC. He did look like he regretted the low bet on that “Long Tom” DD.

It looked to me like Mary knew alien wasn’t right but she wanted to say something rather than nothing

Disney’s 35th animated feature film. The Land Before Time was a bad franchise series for the 1988 movie. Cera the triceratops was an ill tempered dinosaur. She gets bothered a lot by Littlefoot a baby brontosaurus which was seen through the eyes, Ducky the Saurolophus, Spike the stegosaurus, and Petrie the pteranodon.

      • John B./I. says:

Seems the triple stumpers are really going down. Glad to see it!

  4. John B./I. says:

Congratulations to Alex. He won game 3, but his low betting might bite him, unless he wins a game 4. Right now he edged out Jeffrey, he even passed Suzanne but is 1.021 behind Marty. Alex could have moved up considerably today. Not just with a higher FJ bet, but with a higher DD bet (Jefferson) …. well. I hope it won’t be his undoing as far as the ToC is concerned. Win 1 or 2 more games Alex and you are sitting pretty. Second runaway game in a row, so double kudos.
PS Can’t believe (2 years ago) that nobody got “Alaska”…!!

  5. Richard Corliss says:

    Jeffery Schwarz is out.
