Final Jeopardy: Women in Science (1-8-21)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (1/8/2021) in the category “Women & Science” was:

Dr. Margaret Todd gave science this word for different forms of one basic substance; it’s from the Greek for “equal” & “place”

2x champ Yoshie Hill, an executive assistant from Colma, CA, has now won $31,600. In Game 3, she takes on: Cliff Chang, a software engineering manager, originally from Wilmette, IL; and Jim Gilligan, an asst. professor of English education, originally from New York, NY.

Today is the day we all have been dreading for quite some time: Alex Trebek’s last live show. This episode was originally scheduled to air on Christmas Day but was rescheduled due to many holiday preemptions. Don’t miss the tribute video below.

Round 1 Categories: Artists in Europe – It’s the Little Things – Christmas Movies – Wearable Tech – Brooklyn ’99 – “Bing” Pot

Yoshie found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Artists in Europe” under the $800 clue on the second pick of the round. She was the only one with any money, $1,000 from the first clue in the same category. She bet all of that and she was RIGHT.

Well-established in 1639, he paid the hefty price of 13,000 guilders for a house in Amsterdam that today houses his museum. show

Yoshie finished in the lead with $6,800. Cliff was second with $3,200 and Jim was last with $2,400. No clues went uncovered.

Round 2 Categories: History of Flight – Dog Is My Co-Pilot – Hit Songs of the 1960s – a Trip around the Library – 6-Syllable Words – Cross World Clues

Yoshie found the first Daily Double in “Cross World Clues” under the $800 clue on the 12th pick. She was in the lead with $10,400 now, $4.400 more than Clif in second place. This category was right up cruciverbalist Yoshie’s alley. She bet $3,000 and she was RIGHT.

It is sandwiched between Queensland & Victoria (3,5,5) show

Cliff got the last Daily Double in “History of Flight” under the $1,200 clue, with 7 clues left after it. He was in a second place tie with Jim. They both had $8,800, $4,600 less than Yoshie’s lead. He made it a true Daily Double and thought it was a flying squirrel. That was WRONG. Ouch!

Also a type of flying marsupial, this nonpowered craft was pioneered by Otto Lilienthal & Octave Chanute. show

Jim finished in the lead with $12,800 and Yoshie was right behind him with $12,200. At negative $400, Cliff was out of the game at this point. Two $200 clues remained on the board.

BOTH contestants left in Final Jeopardy! got it right.

WHAT IS AN ISOTOPE?

From World Scientific: “The term ‘isotope’ was coined to describe atoms of the same element with identical chemical properties but differing in atomic weight. The name was proposed in 1913 by Dr Margaret Georgina Todd (1859–1918), and it was a brilliant choice, as its derivation from the Greek isos topos, meaning “same place,” reaffirmed the primacy of the periodic table at a time when the fundamental basis for the ordering of the elements was in question.”

An old clue from 1991: PHYSICS ($400) Isotopes are atoms having the same number of protons but different numbers of these

Yoshie bet nothing. Although she was right, she remained at $12,200.

Jim bet $11,601 and won the game with $24,401. Jim Gilligan is the new Jeopardy! champ.

    Darn those Daily Doubles.

  2. Jacob Ska says:

Ken Jennings is a good example of knowledge pays off. The guy has made millions off of trivia and it wasn’t just from Jeopardy. There have been books and other game shows. Now TV host is added to his resume and bank account. It pays to be smart. 😎

  3. Albert says:

When will the first Ken Jennings hosting air?

  4. Dal Higbee says:

This episode should’ve aired on Christmas Day, on the show’s YouTube channel.

Alex will forever be remembered as a legend of jeopardy. He will be missed. We will forever cherish all the memories Alex have given us. Still though too bad cliff’s true daily double failed to work on him and he ends up being dismissed. God speed to Alex trebek.

Great play by the contestants but I really hoped yoshi would have won another game.

I enjoyed reading Alex’s memoir a few weeks ago. Ken, and whoever else hosts going forward, will certainly have big shoes to fill.

I have been put off by some of Ken’s past questionable tweets that have received some attention online. But I always figured that they were anomalies that didn’t really reflect on him as a person. So I was glad that he addressed them recently and apologized, and I believe he did not just do so to save face, but that he genuinely regretted them for their own sake. Twitter seems to bring out the worst in people.

  7. DC says:

    Godspeed Alex.

I cringed a little yesterday when Yoshie mentioned in the chat that her town was known as a necropolis. No reflection on her, just eerie knowing that Alex had already passed.
He gave us so many wonderful memories. I loved how he could just use his eyes to create a laugh for the audience.

You and me both, DC, and esp when he cut it short by just saying “oh, boy” and then continued the game. I don’t think he was expecting that explanation behind the town’s motto

Today is the last day of Alex Trebek and we ended his show with 2 players left in FJ! This week we had three straight triple stumpers and 2 correct solves in the last week of Alex Trebek in FJ!
