Today’s Final Jeopardy question (1/6/2020) in the category “1960s Novels” was:

This book defines its own title as “concern for one’s own safety in the face of dangers… was the process of a rational mind”

Round 2 Categories: The Age of Exploration – Starts & Ends With the Same Vowel – Birds in the Bible – 3-Named People – Foreign Colleges & Universities – Hip-Hop Feuds

Karen found the first Daily Double in “Age of Exploration” under the $1,200 clue on the 10th pick. She was in the lead with $9,600 now, $3,200 more than Kristin in second place. She bet $2,000 and she was RIGHT.

Stories of cannibals & courtesans, Kublai Khan & Prester John abound in this explorer’s circa 1300 “Travels” show

Karen found the last Daily Double in “3-Named People” under the $2,000 clue on the 15th pick. In the lead with $14,000, she had $6,000 more than Kristin in second place. She bet $3,000 and she was RIGHT.

Karen finished in the lead with a runaway $19,800. Kristin was next with $9,600 and Sayeed was in third place with $2,000.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS “CATCH-22”?

“Catch-22” was released as a mini-series on Hulu last June. On its heels, Laura Martin wrote a “What is Catch 22?” article, defining it as “a dilemma or difficult circumstance from which there is no escape due to mutually conflicting or dependent conditions. It’s also come to stand for frustrating bureaucratic logic or rules.” The article contains quotes from Joseph Heller’s 1961 novel where “Catch-22” is mentioned, including its first mention in the book– in a conversation between John Yossarian, the novel’s protagonist, and Doc Daneeka. You’ll see that the partial quote in today’s clue comes from the paragraph right after that.

Christopher Abbott played Yossarian in the Hulu mini-series. Richard Dreyfuss played him in a 1973 TV movie and Alan Arkin played him in 1970 for the big screen.

Sayeed had no response. He lost his $19 bet and finished with $1,981.

Kristin guessed “I’m OK You’re OK”. She lost $9,599, landing in third place with $1.00.

Karen got it right. She didn’t bet anything and won the game with the $19,800 she already had. Her 8-day total is $159,603.

Final Jeopardy (1/6/2020) Karen Farrell, Sayeed Akhtar, Kristin Carter

A triple stumper from each round:

“ALL” THE RIGHT MOVIES ($600) Diamonds & a winning lottery ticket, not $100 bills, are the goal in this 2002 action comedy

HIP-HOP FEUDS ($2000) He has ended his feud with 50 Cent & also changed his physique, making his rap name less accurate

Always like to see an unassuming young lady set the world on fire. Everyday she gives us a surprise. I don’t often contribute anything to VJ’s forum, because by the time I have anything to say, it no longer seems important. However, I must comment on the FJ for Tues. Dec. 31st. I knew that there was something misleading with the clue dealing with Swanson TV-dinners. We bought some of them as early as late 1951 (or early 1952), from A&P in Manchester NH, but they were expensive at $.98 cents a pop and had to be baked for 25 mins. at 425 F. I don’t think they were all that good at the time; they were hot and one had to be careful of the aluminum on top. But they were considered an extravagance that we did not need. After much diligence I found this reference from ezinearticles.com for Swanson’s Jan. 1952 recipe: Turkey with corn bread stuffing & gravy, buttered peas & sweet potatoes, in orange & butter sauce. In 1951 they had also marketed a Turkey pot pie. So it appears that in 1953 when they were overwhelmed with 260 tonnes of turkey, they were well prepared for processing in their facilities.

Finally, Jeopardy! was also preëmpted by CBS (in most of Montana) on Dec. 18th, by the y-clept hearing in the House about something. I didn’t listen for very long but noticed that some of them couldn’t pronounce the capital of the Ukraine. The choreography wasn’t very good and didn’t compare with Busby Berkeley (at least he had a chorus line). They shouldn’t take the show on the road.
It will be good to see the Woodchopper back tonight.

Hi Taiwan Bill. Just so you know, I always enjoy reading your contributions so don’t say it doesn’t seem to matter!! Happy New Year to you.

  2. Howard says:

Way too many triple stumpers again tonight. Karen is a superb player, but any of the 3 GOATs would clobber her.

    • VJ says:

Well, she won’t have to contend with the GOATs in her ToC but she will have to contend with Jason Zuffranieri and Jennifer Quail. Jason had 4 TS in his 8th game and Jennifer had 8 in hers.

  3. Marilyn says:

Not a smart wager by Kristin! She gave up $1000.

  4. Lou says:

Another single solve by Karen and she made a smart bet. It is unfortunate that sayeed couldn’t get anything rolling. We now have another eight time winner.

I’m ok and you’re okay is a self help book by Thomas Harris and wasn’t made into a movie not sure why Kristin chose that. Looks like Karen is not showing signs of slowing down VJ.

    • VJ says:

Lou, I think Karen has been doing remarkably well, owing in part to her speed with the buzzer and not guessing on clues she’s not sure of. I also think being a political analyst gives her an edge over a lot of players in that area. But, honestly, there have been a lot of triple stumpers in her games and I can see that being a problem when ToC time comes around.
