Final Jeopardy: Hymns (1-12-16)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (1/12/2016) in the category “Hymns” was:

Slave trader turned minister John Newton wrote this hymn that 1st appeared in 1779 as “Faith’s Review and Expectation”

2x champ Adam Hoskins has won $42,402 in the last two matches. In his third game, he takes on these two players: Amelia Hershberger, from Albany, NY; and Lisa Cech, from Lakewood, OH.

Round 1: Lisa found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Government & Politics” under the $600 clue before the first break. She was in second place with $2,000, $400 less than Lisa’s lead. She bet $2,000 and she was RIGHT.

Lisa found the last Daily Double in “Horse Health” under the $1,200 clue, with 6 clues left after it. She was in third place with $4,400, exactly $9,000 less than Adam’s lead. She made it a true Daily Double and she was RIGHT.

Adam finished in the lead with $13,400. Lisa was next with $10,800 and Amelia was in third place with $10,600.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS “AMAZING GRACE”?

“John Newton was an Anglican clergyman and former slave ship master…. He collaborated with William Cowper to produce a volume of hymns, including ‘Amazing Grace’. So popular was his preaching, that the church could not accommodate all those who flocked to hear him.” (The Abolition Project: John Newton)

Amelia got it right. She bet it all and finished with $21,200.

Lisa also got it right. She only bet $4,500 so she finished with $15,300.

Adam thought it was “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot. That cost him $8,201 and left him in third place with $5,199, and it made Amelia Hershberg the new Jeopardy! champ.

There weren’t many triple stumpers in this game. Trebek said this one was a toughie and it was for us, too. The category was “H” 2″O”, meaning that the response would start with an H and be followed at some point by double Os. “It’s a hot, violent dust or sand storm that blows in the deserts of North Africa & Arabia.”

Thank goodness for this recap. Jeopardy postponed over here on the West Coast because of the State of the Union address. Thank you VJ

Probably not the best move to go to the CLue Crew category when Alex gives the LTAM warning, particularly if both DDs have been found, including one in said category.

Well, that was another surprise ending for me. I thought someone might go with “Rock of Ages” if anyone got it wrong. And, yeah, Lisa’s bet.

Back to Square One for a 4x champ.

Just finished watching the game; it got postponed in my area. Actually, it worked out for me ’cause I got to watch it even though I worked late tonight.

Anyway, I got FJ by sheer chance as it’s the only Hymn I heard of (I think there’s also one called “What a friend we have in Jesus”, or is it in Moses?… Well, some like that).

Never heard the word haboob before. I think Lisa just blurted out the answer to that 2nd DD without giving it some thought.

Yeah, it’s a friend in Jesus. Anyhow you’re lucky — I wish my network would play the episode later when it is preempted.
