Empire: To Cut the Cake or To Cut Dwight, That is the Question

“The Lyon Who Cried Wolf” (Empire S2 E16) featured the mother and son reunion of Lucious Lyon (aka Dwight Walker) and Leah Walker, the mother he claimed was dead.

Harper (Annie Ilonzeh) and Thirsty (Andre Royo)

I wouldn’t touch a hair on your head (but that doesn’t mean someone else won’t)

Harper Scott, on the other hand, is probably really dead after Thirsty drove her to an eerie scary looking place, stopped his car and said goodbye. She no sooner got out of the car then she was attacked by two thugs and dragged off kicking and screaming.

Jamal (Jussie Smollett) and D-Major (Tobias Truvillion)

There’s ways to change my mind…

Our hopes for a Jamal and Michael reunion appear to be dead as well since Jamal took up with D-Major. That doesn’t look like a particularly healthy relationship, does it?

Carol (Tasha Smith) and Candace (Vivica A. Fox)

Secretive Sisters: Carol and Candace

Did you notice that Cookie’s sisters’ names both start with C? But Cookie’s real name, as we learned the first time Candace came around, is Loretha. She probably got that nickname so they would be the three C’s. Candace returned because she wants Carol to take her kids back but they also had some heavy-duty stuff to hash out — like how Carol should just forget helping Lucious murder a few people. (And to think, we thought she slept with Lucious while Cookie was in jail).

Foolishly, the secretive sisters were hashing this out publicly in an eatery where Tariq, a former cop Carol knows, was eavesdropping nearby. Later, he tried to get Carol to have a drink with him and his FBI Agent card was flashed for the benefit of the audience. What a rat! He must have heard Carol say she is about to get her 90-day pin. Find your info out some other way, G-man, without destroying that woman’s sobriety.

Lucious (Terrence Howard) and Leah (Leslie Uggams)

Sweet singer by day, bloodthirsty baker by night

We were so hoping that FOX would put up a clip of the scene where Lucious sits down at the piano with his mother. That was a great scene and, as always, Leslie Uggams’ voice is magnificent. Instead, the focus is more on the cake scene. In earlier scenes, when his mother called him Dwight, Lucious firmly reminded her that his name is Lucious — twice. He seemed to be warming up to her. At 3 a.m. though, the cakes were on the table, the knife was in mama’s hand and Lucious regressed to the status of a frightened child. it certainly seems that he was telling the stone-cold truth to Juanita — his mother is dangerous. Mama Walker believes that Lucious put all this wickedness into her life and is sorry she didn’t kill him when she had the chance. Lordy! Her own son!
