Dodgers Win Longest World Series Game in History

Seven hours and twenty minutes after Game 3 of the 2018 World Series began on October 26th, the Dodgers’ Max Muncy hit a home run to lead off the bottom of the 18th inning and give Los Angeles a 3-2 victory over the Boston Red Sox on October 27th at Dodger Stadium. Boston leads the series 2-1.

It was the longest World Series game in history both in terms of time and innings. It ended at 12:30 a.m. in Los Angeles, which was 3:30 in Boston. We’re wondering how the sports bars handled that with the game still in progress at Bat Time. The sports data company STATS tweeted that the four game 1939 World Series, a sweep by the New York Yankees over the Cincinnati Reds, had a cumulative time of 7:05, 15 minutes shorter than this one game.

The Red Sox used nine pitchers, with Nathan Eovaldi taking the loss. He deserved a better fate. Eovaldi allowed three hits , one walk and two runs in six relief innings. The Red Sox scored in the top of the 13th, but the Dodgers tied it in the bottom of the inning. Boston’s powerful lineup managed just seven hits. Eovaldi was supposed to start Game 4 but was pressed into service with the bullpen depleted.

Alex Wood, the ninth pitcher used by the Dodgers, got the win with one scoreless inning. The Dodgers used a tenth pitcher, Clayton Kershaw, as a pinch hitter. The starting pitchers for Game 4 were to be determined.
