Dodgers’ Tony Gonsolin and Tyler Anderson Emerging as an Ace of the Dodgers’ Deep Pitching Staff
There’s no question that the Los Angeles Dodgers have a deep starting pitching staff. Clayton Kershaw or Walker Buehler may immediately come to mind, but so far this season, the top two on the staff have been righthander Tony Gonsolin and lefthander Tyler Anderson. Both are having breakout years.
Gonsolin has started 15 games and has a record of 10-0, with a 1.54 ERA. Both stats lead the National League. The 28 year old is in his fourth year with the Dodgers; last year he saw limited action due to a couple of stints on the injured list. When he did pitch he was very good, going 4-1 in 15 appearances (13 starts) with a 3.23 ERA. This year, without the injuries, he’s been almost unstoppable.
Here he is on July 1st vs. the San Diego Padres on his way to his 10th win of the season:
Anderson has been around some. The 32 year old has been in the majors since 2016, and has played for the Rockies, Giants, Pirates, and Mariners before signing as a free agent with the Dodgers in March. He saw the most action in his career with Colorado in 2018, when he was 7-9 with a 4.55 ERA and 165 strikeouts in 32 starts. This season, he’s 9-1 with a 3.09 ERA.
Together, these two have helped the Dodgers to a 50-29 record through games of July 4th, good for 1st place in the N.L. West and a 4 ½ game lead over San Diego.
