San Diego Pitcher Daniel Camarena Blasts Grand Slam Home Run For His 1st Major League Hit

We’re sure every ball player remembers his 1st big league hit, but rookie reliever Daniel Camarena of the San Diego Padres had one that is really memorable.

With his club trailing the Washington Nationals by six runs in the 4th inning, Camarena, who had relieved starter Yu Darvish, stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs. On the hill for the Nationals was ace righthander Max Scherzer. This scenario sounds like the end of an inning, but Camarena had other ideas, hitting a Scherzer fastball for a grand slam home run, and making it an 8-6 game.

The Padres pitchers shut down Washington the rest of the way, and San Diego went on to win 9-8. Camarena hit just the 2nd grand slam by a Padres’ pitcher in the history of the franchise, and the first in 51 years.
