Chiefs Overtake Eagles With Second Half Comeback to Win Super Bowl LVII

Trailing the Philadelphia Eagles 24-14 at half time, the Kansas City Chiefs scored 24 points in the second half in a come from behind 38-35 victory in Super Bowl LVII. A 27 yard field goal by Harrison Butker with 11 seconds left clinched Kansas City’s second Super Bowl victory in four years.

This game was a showcase of great quarterback talent. Playing on an injured ankle, Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes completed 21 passes for 182 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed for 44 yards on six carries. Mahomes was named the game’s Most Valuable Player, completing a sweep after being named the league’s regular season MVP.

If Philadelphia had won, Eagles QB Jalen Hurts might have been the Super Bowl MVP. Hurts completed 27 passes for 304 yards and a touchdown, plus he rushed for 70 yards and three touchdowns. Neither QB threw an interception.

The most controversial call in the game occurred when Chiefs cornerback James Bradberry was flagged for holding on a third and eight play with 1:54 left in the fourth quarter. This gave the Chiefs a fresh set of downs with the ball at the Philadelphia 11 yard line. Mahomes took a knee on the next two plays, setting up Butker’s field goal with 11 seconds left. Some observers (as well as whole lot of Eagles fans), thought the call was borderline and given what was at stake, should not have been called. But Bradberry admitted he had indeed held on the play. The best thing officials in any sport can do is be consistent. If it’s a penalty two minutes into the first quarter, it’s a penalty with two minutes left in the fourth.

Despite that controversy, this one was an exciting and entertaining game, and a good send off to the season. As Super Bowl champs, the Chiefs will host the 2023 season opener, slated for September 7th against an opponent to be determined. Based on the NFL’s schedule formula, each team knows their home and away opponents for next season, although the actual schedules with game dates won’t be released until sometime in April or May. But based on the formula, we do know that Kansas City will host Philadelphia at some point next season.

Super Bowl 57 will definitely go down in the history books. I want to watch it again and again. Jalen Hurts did fumble the ball in the 2nd quarter which allowed the Chiefs to scoop it up and score a touchdown. Still haven’t figured out what happened there other than he was trying to switch the ball from one hand to the other. I will always wonder if that fumble got to his psyche even though the Eagles led by 10 points going into half time.

The Chiefs scored big in the 4th quarter which is not unusual for Mahomes & Company. No mistakes can be made by any team when playing against Mahomes. He reminds me of “The Thinker” by Rodin. The stats may show Hurts played great but the MVP Award says Mahomes was the better thinker. Therein lies the difference imo.
