Chiefs Lose to Broncos in Shocking Fashion

The Kansas City Chiefs got off to a good start in their Thursday Night Football game at home against the Denver Broncos, scoring two touchdowns to stake themselves to a 14-0 lead and putting the Broncos in a deep hole. But Broncos QB Peyton Manning has had an uncanny ability to beat the Chiefs, coming into the game with a lifetime record of 13-1 against them, and he went to work.

Manning threw two touchdown passes in the second quarter and the game was tied 14-14 at the half. The teams exchanged scores and the lead in the second half, with Kansas City taking the lead 24-17 with 2:27 left in the fourth quarter on an 8 yard run by Knile Davis. But Manning then executed a near perfect 80 yard drive capped off by a 19 yard TD pass to Emmanuel Sanders with 36 seconds left to tie the game.

Denver’s kickoff resulted in a touchback. Kansas City had one timeout and those 36 seconds to work with, but it looked like overtime was likely. Then on the first play from scrimmage, the wheels came off for Kansas City. Running back Jamaal Charles showed how the game can humble even elite players. Charles took the handoff, the ball was stripped away from him by linebacker Brandon Marshall, and cornerback Bradley Roby scooped it up and returned it 21 yards for a touchdown.

Losses like that are tough to put behind you, and the Chiefs will have some extra time to do so, as their next game isn’t until Monday night September 28th. Unfortunately for the Chiefs, that next game is against the Packers in Green Bay.
