Brewers’ Corbin Burnes and Josh Hader Pitch a Combined No Hitter

Milwaukee Brewers righthander Corbin Burnes pitched eight no hit innings and closer Josh Hader pitched a hitless ninth inning for the second no hitter in franchise history in Milwaukee’s 3-0 win at Cleveland on September 11th. The only other Brewers no hitter was in Baltimore on April 15th, 1987, when Juan Nieves no hit the Baltimore Orioles.

Burnes struck out 14 and allowed only one base runner on a walk. He had pitched a season high 115 pitches (in part due to all the strikeouts) so Milwaukee manager Craig Counsell opted to have Hader close it out, which he did for his 31st save of the season. Counsell is trying not to overwork his starting pitchers as the Brewers prepare for an all but certain appearance in the post season. The Brewers finished the night with a 13 game lead and a magic number of seven to win the N.L. Central.

Burnes’ stock in the Cy Young Award voting has been on the rise. He improved to 10-4 with a 2.25 ERA and 210 strikeouts in 152 innings pitched.

The no hitter was the ninth of the season, establishing a new record. Cleveland also set a record by being the first club to be no hit for the third time in one season.
