Blue Jays Win Extra Inning Game on Wild Pitch
It looked like the visiting San Diego Padres had wrapped up a 12 inning victory over the Blue Jays in Toronto on July 26th after Matt Kemp hit a two run homer to put them on top 6-4. But the Blue Jays, who are just a couple of games back in the American League East race, weren’t quite finished.
With the bases loaded in the bottom of the 12th, San Diego reliever Paul Clemons walked Jose Bautista, scoring one run to make it 6-5. Josh Donaldson drove in a run with a fielder’s choice, tying the score at 6. Edwin Encarnacion then stepped to the plate. Clemons fired off a curve ball that fell a little short of catcher Derek Norris. It bounced in front of Norris and far enough away from him that Devon Travis raced home with the winning run. Final: 7-6 Toronto.
If you’re San Diego, that’s the kind of loss that takes the wind out of your sails. Not that they’re going anywhere anyway as the Padres record dropped to 43-58, 16 1/2 games behind the front running San Francisco Giants.
